|

Hello all,
I am in the last throes of my ej22 swap into my '76 bus and the final issue I have is the accelerator cable n.b. Won't do this again 😂
I have bought the Rocky mountain westy cable so it's all good length wise etc. But my issue is the reactiveness of the pedal and throttle up hill...it's garbage...my thinking is the almost vertical pull is killing it.
Also my throttle is ever so slightly open...to get 1000 rpms at idle I had to use a bungee cord.
If anyone has thoughts or experience (or prayers) I'd love to know. Photos for amusement below.
Thanks
Andy

Hey I have zero experience with Subi swaps but there is no way on earth that is going to work like that. _________________ '78 Bus 2.0FI

I completed my Subaru 2.5L SOHC into my 76 Westy last year and I used the Small Car Cable. Mine's an Automatic and I upgraded to an automatic from an 86 Vanagon so I could use an external transmission cooler.
I used a throttle reverser and made up a throttle and cruise cable bar bracket using a 3/4" wide aluminum bar that I bent into shape and mounted. It works well but doesn't look as polished as I'd have liked.
Looking at yours, maybe you can make up and add a 90 degree piece of angle that bolts onto the current cable holder and drill a hole and mount the throttle cable upwards towards the throttle pulleys. You may have to build in something up by the gas pedal connection to allow adjustment to take up the slack. Looks tight but doable.

That's a great idea...I'll build a little bracket and a pulley and fit it to the existing bracket....just need to take the 90 degree bend out of it. Thanks...I'll post a pic when I have something that works.
You have the same issue with the accelerator bar not quite returning as well (bungee cord.for me). |

The kickdown lever on the Vanagon Auto Transaxle pulls slightly on the cable to have the right kickdown point so the throttle spring isn't quite strong enough to return it to 0. The spring fixes the issue but I plan to modify the cable so I can remove the spring. Good to hear that you got the non start issue fixed as well. What was the issue? _________________ *******************************

and this is why i don't run the donkeykock throttle reverser
you'll need to get your cable to be more inline with what the stock subaru did, which was basically keep the cable in the same plane as the bell crank.
basically it's almost impossible to do this because as you posted, the cable needs to come almost straight UP to achieve this
only drove 1 bus with a TB reverser. it was like having a on/off switch _________________
