WHooHooo!! VICTORY!!
Can't tell you how NOT stoked i was to struggle with that prop rod for the rest of my life with this car..
Something else that comes after doing things multiple times..
See the tool they use here in the Bible?
Just when i was all about to make one,
It came to me!
A tire iron for a motorcycle works just the same.
The little hook on the end is perfect.
Installing painted trim clips, adjusting doors, cleaning glue for a new decklid seal, sanding/polishing the rear emblem, under-rear-seat insulation...
On and on and on.. |
awesome. i think i just used a big ass screwdriver... but i wasnt going for the finish you are awesome! |
YEAH, finally something went right for Steve. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yeah, i hit every step falling down the stairs with this one no doubt..
Small victories yesterday..
Painting the rocker trim clips black hides them perfectly.
Wences was aghast when he saw those all shiny silver before, and now i know why.
Been dreading another re-do on the lower couple inches of c-pillar headliner.
Chasing out this puffy bulge at the bottom has proven near impossible.
Here's try #3..
Here's a trick gleaned from doing linoleum flooring;
Tape down a piece of paper to make a template.
Transfer to insulation..
There's a textured piece of plastic that goes behind the back seat - makes it look clean from inside the rear trunk..
Tried to stick some of that heavy insulation onto it,
But that made it all heavy and floppy any it wouldn't lay flat anymore.
Then i realized it wouldn't really be blocking sound mounted there anyways! So i stripped it back off and threw it away.. Which felt good!
I'm starting to become a real disbeliever in all of these heavy sound dampening products.
Regretting installing all that heavy expensive crap already..
Don't start in on some isobaric frequency elastic modulus resonance minimization on me right now..
I'm feeling like a fool who got took for money only to add weight..
Starting to feel a rant coming on..
Must... Not... Rant... _________________ Bus Motor Build

I went the cheap bastard route and got the bubble insulation stuff, it brought down the noise in the cabin so much that i barely hear the engine at idle with the stereo on at a audible level. I also used it as my heat shield and insulation for the headliner and it works amazing. I know it doesn't work as well as dynamat or the other professional products but i actually like to hear my engine wind out and hear a bit of road noise.
I still have to do that parcel tray seat back barrier like your doing and was going to go the same route in terms of a template. as always, excellent work bro! _________________ Schnell, SCHNELL!

I used a similar thing in my T-34 (hot water heater blanket) roof from my local Ace hardware store. It worked very well for cutting down on the heat inside. For the floor, I used some AC duct work sound insulation I got from McMaster Carr. Worked well for sound and heat. Nice thing is I could pull it out when I needed to get to the floor itself, since I didn't glue it in place.
The rest of the car(s) never got any extra sound deadening, as I've had issues with the factory stuff falling down and jamming the window mechanism. Or in other words, if it aint there, it can't fail. Sounds very Volkswagenesque. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Never got a pic of the finished product.
I'm always bad like that..
Here's the rear trunk area.
TMI gets their carpet only in 3-foot wide rolls.
So there's this ugly seam that runs thru the middle.
It'll lay down more with some trimming and ironing..
Other than that, it looks decent enough for the inside of a trunk.
See also that piece of black textured plastic attached to the rear seat.
Couple of zip-ties show a little, but I'm finding a way to carry on with life.
Main thing i wanted there was to have the whole rear seat come in/out easily without tools.
The plastic part just stays with the seat back so we'll call it a win.
Rear seat was kind of crazy huge and puffy looking when it went in.
Like a giant stuffed sofa!
Takes a while to get used to..
Shows how long it's been since i seen it in there.
Day before yesterday Wences said he could come by for one last time.
Spent the morning getting things ready.
He said he wanted to pressure wash before the final buff,
So i got things put away and covered up.
Also got out all the wax and buff stuff.
He used the three 3M compounds and the Zymol and that's it.
He considered that ceramic stuff a fail, as well as this black wax i got too.
We tried all of these other products and more, but the Zymol wins hands down.
Turns out he wanted the car on the wheels out in the grass for pressure wash,
So we stabbed the wheels on with a couple old lugs.
Mailman hasn't brought my stock long tie rod yet, so it all went back together temporary-like just to move.
Was pretty cool to see it 100% together with it's first wash on.
Took a bunch of pics but we'll spare y'all.
By the end of the day i had gotten the two other cars out of the garage and this thing in.
Hard when pulling it around to not go take it for a rip,
but with only two lugs each wheel and a tie rod smacking a fuel fitting that might have ended poorly.
Now the job is to give it a hand wash to remove all of the buffing compound,
And then a hand wax with Zymol.
Then comes the llooonng task of detailing the wax and compound out of all cracks/crevices..
Then back up on stands, wheels off, in the garage for doing all that same detail work underneath..
Whoo..!
Big big thanks to our hero Wences..
Man. That guy styled me out SO hard on this project..
Can't even believe that this -very- talented guy kindly just gave me all of this..
Love you, man.. *sniff*..
I'll owe you forever. _________________ Bus Motor Build

And that's why I don't build show cars. I've helped others who have the time and patience to keep them spotless after they're done, but I'd rather just jump in and go somewhere. Very nice job Steve. And a big thanks to Wences, so this project can eventually be driven. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Fun day today!
Started off cleaning up a pad.
Old trick i learned working at Greenwood Plaza Texaco;
Wet, then add a bit of laundry detergent and scrub with a stiff pushbroom.
Washed the car outside in the driveway,
Then drove it in for drying.
Waxed the roof and sunroof while it was still low and on the ground.
Got it up on the stands and wheels off
Man! It’s SO nice working on a flat level pad!
Smooth and easy.. Jacks and creeper just roll along..!
Trick i learned from my Dad.
This stuff used to be called Wesley’s Bleche-White.
“Gets the whites white and the blacks black”
Made even these new tires look way better.
See the brown stuff being washed away here..
Got things dried off (water spots are the enemy at this stage)
Started in polishing top surfaces,
And chasing any white buffing or polish grit from crevices.
Stuff really pops when it’s polished..
Quite a good time at this point.
Just a few more details,
And hours of wiping.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Thanks for the kind words and for following along.
Been watching your build as well.
I don't always have time to respond to everyone who chimes in,
but it does mean a lot that you all take the time to look and think about this project.
Lately,
With all of the time going into this project right now,
It's doing pretty significant damage to my family relationships..
The wife and kids need more attention.
This would have been a good project before i had kids, or after they were grown,
But as it happened,
I really missed a lot.
Now that the kids are growing up, starting to do their own thing,
I'm realizing that spending most of my evenings/weekends on this car probably wasn't the greatest idea.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Yep.
After the anger and anxiety pass, then you hit guilt and remorse.
Then quit posting sheit here you lug, go throw the ball with the kid and slap the wife around.
And I mean that in a fun, have a hug, rub her back, get her flowers, take a walk, and maybe get lucky kind of way.

Man! another whole damn day!
Busy AF and what did i do??
Got a stock tie rod from Joel cleaned up.
Scraped off the undercoating, couple rounds of paint stripper.
Got it up under the car for marking a couple of slight bends to clear my fuel fittings, and also shortening,
Brake/spindle combo needs shortened tie rods..
That means tapping deeper and moving the divot and slit as well.
Wire wheeled/blasted/plated fasteners.
Front hub caps looked like shit after welding and the zinc coating had failed.
Got 'em pulled off, gas bath, blasted for tooth, and some JB Weld.
After a night's drying, they'll get sanded and go with the tie rod to Brooke for black powder coat.
Wanted these powder because paint will just chip off again installing them..
Caught Ian the Polisher and his newest helper on-site, and managed to get the wheels touched up.
Couple rounds of tire mounting plus the dreaded water spots(!)
And professional help was needed, saving me hours of struggle trying to get rims back to pretty again.
Spent a couple hours on a creeper under the car.
Cavity wax had oozed out of crevices here and there,
So it got chased down with some wax & grease remover.
Did some wiping of dust as well.
By the time i got my wheels back and unloaded, it was almost dinnertime.
My ass was dragging, so i gave up, and went and sat my sorry ass on the couch for the rest of the evening..
Wondering the whole time how so much work all day long got so little done.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

And he didnt polish where the wheel meets the disc. Id call that shit out if I saw the car, as well as him cheaping out and using US air instead of German. I bet he didnt even use US air and put Brazilian in. _________________
