Hey Gang.
I've brave the sticky and smelly world of VC rebuilders.
I searched and searched to see if there is any method to proper disc installation. I carefully removed them as a unit as to keep the order correct. As I was cleaning the discs there seemed to be no real rhyme or reason to how they are in there. The slotted discs have a small circle stamped to one side of them. These are sometimes up(cap side) or sometimes down. There is a noticeable smooth and rounded side to both the slotted discs and the ones with circles. Sometimes the smooth sides meet each other and other times the sharper sides do. All this randomness makes me uneasy.
For those that have experience....is this typical? Is it really just random other than the order? The order looks correct. Two unique discs at each end and alternating discs with spacers.
The VC was working but creeping toward aggressive. I probably should have left it alone but that's just not my style. I wonder if this has been rebuilt in the past. I have fresh fluid and seals ready to go. I just need to make sure I'm assembling the discs in the correct orientation. I've watched the YouTube videos (German) and read the Shufti blog. None of which seemed to address the facing or clocking of the discs.
Any addition guidance is appreciated.
Pics, because we all love them.

Hey vanatic,
I'm certainly no expert but my experience was that the orientation of the discs was important. but not so much the specific side.
Since yours was a little agro but working I would re-install them the same way with new fluid and seals just as they were.
I was nervous about this repair as well but 100,000 miles later all is still well!

There was a recent thread with a similar question. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=749949&highlight=vc The member ended up taking a spare one apart to check the order. I don’t recall the exact details.
When I did mine, I attempted to use my logic. The outer splined plates are fixed, so i oriented them so they were aligned top to bottom. For the inner splines, there was a hole or mark that I aligned top to bottom. Seems to work fine. _________________ ☮️ |
