my 60 single cab speedometer has the 40mph number in the 12:05 position rather than straight up at 12 o'clock. Is this a common position? Thanks

You mean directly to the right of the turn indicator diamond? Early speedos are that way where as later ones center the speed between the two indicator arrows I believe.

They always seem a little off to me, but is it possible that the speedo is not rotated all the way counter-clockwise on its mounting hooks? See photo of 80 mph speedo above.

what is the top speed on your speedo? 70 or 80?

half of that is the center (12 o'clock)

That picture is tilted slightly to the right. 40 mph is at the 12 o'clock position on an 80 mph speedometer. You could file the slots in the mounting ears to allow a little more rotation.
