I remember those balsa wood gliders. Had a lot of fun with those. Then I found the ones with the rubber band powered propelers, whole dfferent world now. |

my father forced those toe head haircuts on me, sometimes as punishment. I also enjoyed those gliders, and often modified them. As time went on, my parents refused to allow me to even have a 10 speed bicycle, as they were far to complicated for my simple mind. I found broken ones and rebuilt them. When I quit working for George Barris in 1971, I went out on my own. Soon afterwards my father asked me when I was going to get a real job. I eventually earned a worldwide reputation specializing in 356. He worked at a desk in national defense. Thanks dad. He’s gone now, and my last haircut was 16 years ago. Wow, that one brings back some odd memories for me. I was about 12 and lived in the S.F. Valley during those riots, and my Dad was L.A. County Sherriff working in their downtown "Crime Lab", a forerunner of the CSI shit. He did handwriting analysis on forgery cases, wearing a suit in an office job. But with the riots everyone got called up to street duty and he spend about a week in Watts in riot gear as seen in the photo and he rode the "shotgun" position in those huge Sherriff Dept prison buses. Scary times, we were never sure how safe he could be during those riots. So sad... He's almost 90 and long retired now up in Idaho and doing very well!
Great shot! I hope the pre-'56 VW Sunroof driver was just in the wrong place at the right time and was let go...
