Pushing the 3,500 mile mark since I put it on the road.
Knock on wood....... no real issues.
There is a lot to do yet but I am completely lacking the time to do it!
All new wheel bearings
New brake rotors
Fix A/C
Fix throttle body hang up
Change trans filter
Change differential oil
Install cruise control
Install Van Tracker
Install Plasma gauges
Install headlight relays
Install E code Hella head lights
Install 3rd brake light
Fix / paint bumpers and cladding
Heavy Sigh.........
Moving has really gummed up the works!
Tip of the day? ...... don't ever move!
Oh and digging up your backyard to expose the septic tank so you can pump it and make pipe repairs as well as create a new cover doesn't help one bit!
Restoring the yard is going to take days all by itself, but if you like mud when it rains, it is an ideal situation right now!
On the plus side, I don't need to mow it.

I just ordered two more cross bars for my Hauler Rack.
This will make the rack much more versatile with smaller spaces between the cross rails.
Obviously not my Van but this is the Hauler Rack which isn't yet fully installed on my Van ......
I currently only have the cross bars mounted to the rain gutter......
I also put a 5’x4’ x 1/4” Masonite sheet good on the floor where I removed the middle seat.
I put the textured side up over the old carpet for now. Things won't slide much.
I'm figuring out what tools and supplies I'll be carrying on a regular basis and how to best store it for easy access and safe travel.
I will then build a rack system for them.
I don't want to cripple my ability to carry 4x8 sheet goods with a poorly designed rack system.
The Van has been wonderful for work thus far.
It is also a unique "hook" to customers.
I met one lady for a bathroom remodel who is into old VW buses and would love to get one for her furniture rehab business.
She was looking at old 60’s aircooled but I suggested a newer Vanagon may serve her better year around.
I mentioned I'll rehab one for her but it won't be cheap!
My daughter has chosen to use the Vans Maroon and White colors as her company colors.
You know Females...... everything has to be neat and coordinated!
I even purchased a pile of new jeans for she considers my holely jeans "unacceptable" for the image!
Not to mention I got my"Covid" hair cut finally.
I'm almost presentable now!
But hey, don't Dads exist to embarrass their Daughters?

So ends another crazy stress filled day!
Left Pa at 5:33 to spend the day at the Jersey Shore helping my Brother with a project.
Up in the hot dusty attic and down to the moist smelly crawl space.
A long rigorous day for sure.
But he hasn't been well for quite awhile and just isn't able to do what young and nimble kids like myself can do!
I then fought N.J. Rush hour North up to Morris County to pack up some more of the house before spending tomorrow in the hot Sun working on pool pumps and filters.
Last item was to pull the Van in the Garage and drop the Automatic Trans Oil pan.
I've been putting it off for over a month and 3,500 miles.
I just couldn't take the stress of not knowing what is in that pan!
I've changed about 12 qts of ATF to date and the burnt smell is largely gone.
New atf does quickly get dirty but I think it is the fresh detergents scrubbing the case and mechanism.
My fear was to find a huge debris field of sludge and bits in the oil pan!
Sometimes while you want to know what's in there........ there is a strange peace about NOT knowing what is in there!
Knowledge can be a dangerous thing sometimes!
Anyway, under I went, pulled the dipstick and caught just about every single drop!
Next I zipped off the four oil pan bolts and held it up against the trans case.
Gently I lowered on side allowing any excess to flow out.
Did I mention I did this HOT?
Fresh from 100 mikes of high speed (for a WBXer) driving.
Ouch! Oil and oil pan HOT!
I've dropped a lot of pans and know about reading the debris field.
But........
It is minimal!
Not much goo, not much gold dust..... a few flecks in the lower recesses of the pan.
On initial glance......... fir 240,000 + miles? A most excellent debris field!
I really don't know this history of this unit.
I do know that when the engine was out I pulled the Torque Convertor seal to renew it.
The seal I removed was a genuine White VW seal.
Original?
Rebuilt with some original parts?
Who knows?

Well, I barely had the time to change these oils let alone put in drain bungs!
I figured if I did it now I'd be rushing and they would leak.
I really don't need that aggravation right now and decided to pull the pans at a future date for bungs.
I did decide to change the engine oil too, it was coming up on 3,000 since the initial first oil change after the engine work.
I have about three gallons in qts of Mobil 1 15/50.
I thought, "what a waste! That oil is way too thick!"
But for Giggles I went onto Mobil 1’s web site.
Punched in 1990 VW Vanagon 2.1 Summer and lo and behold!
Recommended engine oil ......
Mobil 1 15/50!
Alrighty then!
In it went.
Just got home, unloaded and reloaded for tomorrow.
Will be Up at the butt crack of dawn and off to Bloomsburg!

Well, Today the Stars Aligned (and the mercury soared to 91°! ) and I finally put on my new Zimmermann front brake rotors.
It needed them badly plus I've a lot of bearing noise. I know a lot of it is in the rear but figured it is a no brainer to renew them in the front now.
Whoever last put on the 22mm head brake caliper retainers was doing a Superman imitation!
Those buggers were T I G H T ...... TIGHT!!
I pounded at them with a two pound hand sledge on the wrench end and they only reluctantly let go.
Good thing I renewed the bearings, the Right Outer was less than ideal.
The rollers were discolored and the race was a dull grey. No pits or obvious damage, it just looked heat beat.
By the time I was done....... I was heat beat!
I put in SKF bearings and Elring seals.
I gotta say, I'm no fan of the Elring Seals!
What a horrible design! Getting them in and seated evenly was nothing shy of a nightmare.
I found no grease..... zero...... nada ...... none!
The grease made it tip and slide about.
Even without grease it was horrible.
Anyway, new front rotors, new front wheel bearings, new front brake pads and I still have brake vibration and bearing noise!
Obviously the rear isn't happy.
I'll order up some drums, might even check with BusDepot, I can pick them up quickly, and put in my new rear bearings ASAP.
Progress made, A very good thing.

Well, they say that Life is what happens while you are making other plans.
Yesterday I put in new front discs and new front wheel bearings.
Today I made a trip to Bloomsburg.
My daughter came with me and the Van was NOISY!
No, not that normal noisy, the can't hear each other talk rumbling noisy!
I just got home and dragged the jack to the Van.
I suspected the RIght Rear to be my culprit.........
Sure enough! Grasp the tire at 6 & 12 and rock....... a solid 1/8” of movement..... maybe more!
Went to the left rear ...... a tad less but a lot of play!
The axle nuts are tight, the hub is firmly on the stub shaft.
The Van is now parked, I ran it 3,775 miles since it went back on the road.
Heavy sigh........ Toyota goes to Bloomsburg tomorrow.
I had ordered rear Drums and Shoes from FCP about 4 am today, they will be here Thursday. They had Zimmermann Drums. I like Zimmermann stuff...... or maybe it's just a fun word to say.....
I'll cancel a planned Jersey run later this week.
I hope the bearing carriers are OK.
I have a good used one coming from Terry but am unsure of its arrival time frame.
I was going to build that one up as a spare for long journeys.
Oh well ....... I'm tired, the forced "rest" will be good.
