Since the boot was in otherwise excellent condition, I simply hung it over a saw horse outside and painted it with a can of flexible vinyl black spray paint and it looks like new again.

...and its a heck of a lot easier to replace/repair/refurbish a boot than a convertible top.

Nice car!

Thanks, NOVA. BTW, without opening the rear deck lid, are there any other visual differences between your '71 and my '70 (besides the door lock location)? Just curious.

Since we are on this subject, anyone have a picture of the hold down clips and where they are mounted? I was told these will help to keep from popping out the snaps.

There are pins/clips to help hold the boot in place
(see E in the pic below).
But the snap catches (see C & D below) hold the top down
and stop it from bouncing around while driving. These do
a better job in stopping the boot snaps from pulling loose.

The snap catches are occasionally available in the
Samba Classifieds.

The one that comes to mind immediately is seat covers. 70s have a basket weave type of pattern. 71s are more like a tuck and roll type of pattern.

Wench_Weber,

Here's a thread with an inexpensive fix for those clips to hold the CV top down (assuming only the hook/clip part is missing)...

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=348031&highlight=

Another advantage of using these clips is that they keep the folded top from bouncing while driving which keeps the sharp edges of the frame from wearing through the installed boot.

Make sure to use stainless or aluminum snaps, with all stainless screws and a rubber seal between the snap and the body. Anything else tends to rust after a couple years if you live where it rains much.

I finally pulled the pin and got a cover from TMI, it came with two D rings on elastic straps which I can not figure out where they go.
Does anyone have a picture of inside the car with the cover on?

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy, there should be a place on those plastic convertible hinge covers, like a hook, they always break off, that's where I used to hook my top boot so it wouldn't flop around. Not sure if that's the proper place, just what I used.

So this is what I have to work with. The D ring on the elastic strap doesn’t do anything if I hook it on that plastic peg, the only place it has any tension is on the seat back pin that snaps into the “clothes pin”???????
I’m stumped.

That's as good of place as any, unless you are looking for it to be super tight, you may have to devise a hook for it somewhere unless someone has another suggestion. It may still flop around when driving. I think another thing I used to do was just tuck that tail in under the folded down rear window. Just don't lift it too much. Honestly I didn't drive around a lot with the boot, I would mostly put it on when I parked somewhere for a while just so it looked pretty sitting there!
Keep us posted what you come up with.
Jeff

Looks like some just use the seat back to keep the boot in place ↓

Plastic-window top boots had straps with a catch or snap that would attach to the hinge cover ↓

Has anyone found an eyelet that matches the original turn buckles? The modern eyelets I've found are all too big and that applies to both the ones with folding spikes and the crimp type. It seems the old turn buckles are smaller than the modern counterparts. I've searched European suppliers on the premise that it might be a metric thing, but no luck. Commonsense fasteners is another name for them. Searched ship chandlers, Camping, Caravans, Trailer and 4WD site but zilch. I've sort of given up and just use the back seat to stop the cover flapping about. I don't want to use a modern turnbuckle when I have the originals. this is where being fussy is a curse.
Anyone?
Nicholas

I think I’m going to try and move the straps if needed to keep it tight as I very rarely drive with the top up.

So this is what we came up with, I ended off going to my local upholstery shop to get some advice. They have done great work for me in the past and did not disappoint.
One extra snap on the inside and a stretchy paracord loop pulling the boot down over that little coat hanger looking thing. Anybody know what’s that for?
The car looks way more finished off now, and it looks like it’s almost top down weather here, finally.
Tom’s upholstery in Brantford Ontario Canada if anyone local is reading this.

Once heard that you could park the buckle for the over-the-shoulder seat belt there when not in use.

Nice job on the boot too!

That sounds good, I have static lap belts but I will try anyway.

And thanks.
