Mrs. Cusser alerted me that the battery in my 1970 VW may be dead. This battery was purchased in 2011 and spent the first half of its life powering my 1971 Convertible, amazing life for a battery in Arizona heat (typical here is 2-3 years).
So just wondering: any sizes other than Group 42 fit and mount at the bottom like the Group 42? Thanks.
Don't fret, I WILL check out the battery myself once I get there, before I spend $150 on a new battery..... _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Can't help on the battery size question.
But if she's only dragging the harrow through the corral. It might not be getting enough time to recharge.

I just did a battery too. Same deal, I limped it along over the past decade. I got a little life extension with one of those battery reconditioners.
I installed SuperStart 42PRM Group 42T5, which fit the stock bracketry. The battery was a little taller than the one I removed. It did not come with the positive terminal protector, so I just 3D printed one. _________________ 1972 Standard Beetle

What place, exactly? Name, link, etc.
Autozone, O'Reilly, Advance are $150 exchange, and Costco and Walmart don't have Group 42.
And does anyone know if the taller/significantly less expensive Group 26R mounts like the group 42 battery? I wouldn't be carrying passengers in the back no way, no how. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Ok all that info was contained in my first post, but cut to the chase it is a group 26 battery available at malwart. No problems been running mine since last fall. Group 26 fits well enough for me.
You don’t need group 42 unless you are purist and think someone will peek under the seat and give you shit because you have wrong one. I think group 86 was also a possibility. Reread my first post, there you’ll find it. |

Update: returned 100 miles to where the 1970 is, confirmed no cranking situation.
Read battery voltage at just over 10 volts, like a shorted cell. Voltage across batter terminals while attempting to start was under volts, not good.
As a lark, hooked up my 45 year old 4-amp battery charger overnight. This morning I disconnected that, read battery voltage as 12.6, and started up the VW, no issues. So will monitor this before purchasing a replacement battery, might possibly "get lucky". _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Dude! buy a battery and be done with it. You got 10 years out of it in Arizona - How much more luck can you squeeze out of it? |

Well, no wonder you got lucky - A gift of a new car would do that. That is assuming you got lucky with the recipient of that car and not the person who sold it to you. |

Update: battery did not hold charge 8 hours. I reserved/bought online a 26R battery at Walmart just a few miles from where I'll be playing softball tomorrow.
Of course they'll want to "deliver it to my vehicle" but I need to turn in my 2011 battery as core. So I'm betting this will confuse the Walmart employees big time !!! _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Purchased 26R battery online, Walmart software said only 2 remaining. Charged me a $12 "bottle fee"; apparently I am not smart-enough to know that means "core charge". Anyway, picked up the battery at "Pick Up", then had to take the old battery to Automotive Dep't to get my core charge refunded. But the 26R did fit, I made a new strap for it.
So now Mrs. Cusser can use the VW tomorrow.
Yes, we won our game, scored 21 runs in the "open inning". _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. So you scored the GMC cool, now go find a nicer newer car or truck for you with more modern features. Soon the parts for the 90's vehicles will become unobtainium. Spend that money enjoy it you earned it so get what you want now.
Glad that you got that battery for the VW. Make sure that it does not shorts out on the seat springs if it is taller. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.
Numbers Matching VW's are getting harder to find. Source out the most Stock vehicle and keep that way. You will be glad you did.

Hello, I just shelled out what I thought was too much for at Duracell branded Group 42 unit from Batteries Plus.
If there is a next time...Does the Group 26 alternative have the flanges on the bottom that fit the pan clamp mechanism? |

My 2004 Frontier is pristine, and only 106K miles, that should last me forever !!! 4-cylinder, 5-speed truck are no longer available new here.
No one will be sitting in the back of the 1970 anyway, plus I did use a terminal cover, and some plastic over that as insulator.

Note that it's "26R" (not 26) that has the terminals in the correct configuration and towards the front of the VW, 26 is the opposite.
Yes, there are little ridges on the battery case at the bottom, the forward side fits in the pan bracket. I found out that I have a home-made bracket for the rear side (will look for correct one at home) so I rigged a strap from flexible "plumber's tape" which is a steel strap, not tape at all, to secure the battery over its top:
