I just got YOM California license plates approved by the DMV for my '50 beetle and installed the rear plate, using the bracket that was already there. There hasn't been a front plate on the car in forever. How can I install the front plate without drilling holes in the bumper? _________________ Charlie

California requires a plate on the front so it doesn't matter how it looks. _________________ Chris

yep California requires a front plate. I think it for the highway / bridge cameras .
so big brother can send you a ticket in the mail. my 46 has one YOM plate. I get away with it because in 45-46 California only issued one plate. due to lack of steel from the war effort. I told a cop friend . he did not know that little nugget.
never been pulled over . I am sure I would have to explain if I do. I agree a
front plate looks awful. never ran one on my other car's until it was made law.
and after getting a ticket in my 1969 chevy . way back in the 80's? 90's?
something like that. sold the car in 1999 so way before that. maybe you can
find a way to clip it on instead of drilling into your bumper. ? that sucks.

Plus, a YOM (Year of Manufacture - 1950) plate looks cool. _________________ Charlie

That would require drilling holes in the rare split bumper. I'm wondering if anyone can show me their way of attaching the plate without drilling holes. I'm sure I can come up with an elaborate solution, but maybe there's something out there that's more simple.
I've gotten ticketed three times on other cars for no front plate. _________________ Charlie

Have you thought about using one of those adhesive supermagnets? _________________ Thanks,

I saw this wanted ad on the site where it looks like it's clamped around the bumper somehow:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1905310
Something like that?
I'm thinking some sort of c-shaped clamp on the top 2 holes so it sits low but clamps around the lip of the top of the bumper to hold it firm _________________ How to Post Photos

Behind the bumper, do you have two brackets that attach the bumper to the car, right?
Use the mounting bolts on the left and right bracket behind the bumper to attach a length of 1 inch flat stock parallel to to bumper. It will be behind the bumper and will not be visible.
Now attach a bracket that hangs from the flat stock and attach the plate to the bracket. |

FYI this one is as simple as can be and reasonably priced.
It's what I'm running on my '52:

You're welcome Charlie, I'm glad to help save the day
(+ your un-drilled grooved bumper).
Happy 'dubbing

I agree that no front plate looks better, but in Europe front and rear plate are required as well. _________________ drive it like you just robbed the bank

I think mine looks OK, it's a repro of the original version for a 1946, part number 8 13 021 which I bought from http://ww2vw.com/number-plate/
The size may not be quite correct for UK specification but it looks correct for the year in Europe. _________________ Rod,
