|

I removed the front body mount sheet metal for the project I am working on and need to bolt it in place to weld it back on. Only one side had an isolator under it and it was squished pretty flat to less than 1/8", The isolators on the are reusable.
I temporarily put the crossmember back in with nothing between the body tabs and the beam. Problem is, the crossmember lines up good where I need to reattach it to the rest of the body. Whatever I put between the body and the beam is going to make the panels not line up. I didn't notice any load on the sheet metal when I removed the crossmember.
Which isolators go between the body and beam? Here are some pics of what I'm talking about. Thanks in advance.

Thus the reason why the old pads were so compressed, the crossmember supports the body on the beam. You should have the thick pads between the body & the beam. Weld the crossmember in place without the pads, then, after it is solidly mounted, either loosen/remove all of the forward pan bolts, or drop the beam enough so that you can insert the body pads. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Some form of Electric AC
Check out his photo gallery |
That's kinda groovy. I didn't know that existed, but of course it does for electric cars. |

I got the correct pads from a local shop today. As suspected they are about 12mm which is sort of irrelevant. The shoulder on the beam only allows the body to tighten down so far. With everything torqued down the crossmember is 6mm+ too high.
TCTDI: i think that's my next move to loosen some of thr fwd body bolts
Yes, it's an electric brushless a/c comoressor. Data sheet says 40amps. We'll see how well thr Subaru alternator handles it.
Got the idea cause the jets that have a vapor cycle system use a motor driven comoressor. Albeit brushed and drawing a little over 100amps + the condensor blower (brushed too).
It looks like some weekend race cars run a similar setup.
There are electric cars and hybrids that run electric compressors but they operate at high voltage. Ran across a YouTube about a Prius compressor that is electric driven and engine driven.
I'll write a seperate thread about the ac. |

Here's a pic of the rubbers. Left to right is new bottom, old bottom, old top.
The new one is about the same size as the old, just twice as thick.
Think im going to take it to the bandsaw.
