I agree the rivets and screws look pretty untouched other than the white spray paint on the M-code plate

Everything matches up like it should so you're all good.

The m-code plate doesn't list the 23 portion of the VIN as it's technically the model#. 23 is the 2312. 231 is Kombi with left hand drive and the 2 is the paint type.

Well, it does list the 23 on that tag, but to the left of the rest of the VIN. It is easy to read if you know how.

Your bus was made in 1966, although it is a 1967 model.
Westfalia put the year of manufacture on the fabrik # tag. It is normal for '67 Westies buildt in 1966 to have 1966 on this tag.
For a bus buildt when yours was, it should have the later radio hole, and no reverse lights.

Enjoy!

VIN 237002101 :: Built on: August 1966

Think that M-code is wrong.

07 7

means born July 07.

I'm not arguing that this is a '67 model year bus, but July 7 would be 1966 model as the new model year came out on August 1. Plus the last July of 1966 built bus had a vin of 6198668

Since this vin number is super early for the '67 model year (This is the 2101 built '67 model year bus), could this bus have accidentally gotten the wrong month stamped on the m-code plate? Or????

Something isn't adding up compared to the VIN section

last bus buildt July 1966 was 216 179 668
last bus buildt Aug 1966 was 217 020 467

The date on the mcode plate probably a typo, Probably should have been stamped 07 8 .

217 000 001 was buildt 1 Aug 66

217 010 233 was buildt 15 Aug 66

This mcode plate has a typo. Do you see it?

@Clara, it has what I believe is the later radio area. One slot to the left of the (cut) radio hole:

Cool thread. A lot of good info. I had a 66 and loved it. Learning and uncovering info is one of the best parts of the hobby. Enjoy! Be patient when removing any paint, you might find treasures underneath (OG paint, logos, PO scribbles...who knows). Again, ENJOY!

The date on the M-code plate is the day it was stamped. The plate was stamped before any part of the body was assembled. In July, the guys stamping the plates got a little ahead so that they could go on vacation in late July and early August.

It was only this way starting in '64 or '65. Prior to that the stamping went on pretty much continuously.
