Okay, so I've been bouncing around the idea of building or at least putting together another rail buggy.
I came across an older decently solid rail frame with trans and good bones, but no motor. gonna need some patching up, but I can do that.
Then I out the word out that I needed an engine. I ended up with a 1200 industrial pump VW engine. The first 3 of the number on the engine is 122. It has 16 hours on the hour meter.
I have the carb, 12v alternator, 12v starter, fuel pump, distributor, 12v fan, pulley, etc.
What I don't have is flywheel, pressure plate and clutch kit. to marry the motor to the trans.
Do I need the 180 FW, Clutch and starter, or should the 200mm setup work in there? Somewhere I read about grinding something in the bell housing.
I'm doing this poor boy style and honestly have less than 300 in everything so far.
My last buggy was a 68, and I'm rebuilding a 74 SB, and have tinkered with dubs through the years, but while I'm working on trying to heal a blown disk in my back, I figured I'd ask the experts. And then I decided to jump on the forum and ask you guys.

For a dirt cheap rail build, I would just get a 6 volt flywheel, starter, clutch and starter bushing. That's assuming the crank/flywheel take a gasket (early) instead of the late 200mm o ring connection. You probably wont be able to slap a 200mm flywheel on there. Also, you need to set end play again with the proper shims that match the crank. 40hp shims are different than later ones. Your other stuff is 12 volt, so just run a 12 volt battery if you don't care about beating up the flywheel ring gear and starter.
Your other option is you can take a 200mm flywheel and machine the o ring groove out of it, that lets you bolt it up to the early crank too. I have one like that I used on my last 40hp.
You can also put a 12 volt solenoid on a 6 volt starter _________________ Check out my truck brought back from the dead... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=420762&highlight=sprayed+blood
