Hey folks....working on a neighbor's Jeep Patriot and we've got a brake line fitting that's been removed, but we can't get it to spin freely on the line. It turns, but it is very snug. We've treated it with Kroil and even some heat, but we can't get it to turn freely. On all the other lines, the fitting turns freely and can slide up the brake line.
Any tricks to freeing it up? Thanks. _________________ '65 Sunroof Bug |

Continue with what you are already doing, obviously there's some corrosion inside the nut or on the line that's binding it up.
If you have a drill with a big enough chuck to reach over the threads to the hex flats maybe try giving it a spin?, careful though, if it seizes on the line it'll twist it off. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Thanks...we did try spinning with a cordless ratchet and long socket. Turned, but not freely. Decided not to over do it, for exactly the reason you stated...worried about damaging the line. _________________ '65 Sunroof Bug |

Get there the right flare tool, Dremel off the fitting, and flare in a replacement section _________________ .ssS! |

My concern with this would be whether the line would still be long enough and line up correctly with where it needs to be screwed in. Here's a photo of what we're working with (not our car)....the two fittings that won't spin freely are the first two from the left on the top of the ABS module.
I've never used a flaring tool, but that's something I'm sure I could figure out with some practice.

Plenty of slack vertical fir a new flare on the shortened piece to pick up the ABS controller. Worst case, cut back at the straight run and make a new bent piece _________________ .ssS! |

I'd still try to free up the original first, learning to use a flaring tool is hard.
If you did F it up you could cut back and use a double female coupler to replace the end you were experimenting on if it gets really out of hand. Once you've finally figured out double flares of course.
Does a Jeep use double inverted flares?, or are they fully metric and bubble flared?, or a mix of both like some GM products? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Yeah, definitely going to keep trying to work it loose. It's not a daily driver so there is no rush. When I said experiment, I meant just on a scrap piece of tubing. But after watching a couple of videos, I can see that trying to do this on the Jeep in a tight space would be VERY challenging for a rookie like me!
Thanks for all the replies so far. _________________ '65 Sunroof Bug |

I’m a certified moron and flare stuff all the time. It’s really quite simple.
Once you Dremel it off, post a picture and we can tell you the right one to buy.
It’s almost certainly an SAE double flare
The 15 minutes needed to master flaring will put you in a new relationship with brake line work. You just chop crappy, rusted , stuck off and flare in brand new. It’s very empowering. _________________ .ssS! |

Alright how about this? How long is the line? Relatively short? If so you can bring the entire line into a parts house and generally they have different lengths of line preflared with fittings on them.
If not mix between penetrating oil and brake clean to clean the debris from inside the nut. Try not just spinning but also pushing the fitting up the line some, also use a little sand paper on the line close to the nut. All it is, is corrosion on the nut that has "expanded" the interior of the nut and your need to remove it. Just like you would remove corrosion from anywhere else.
In the meantime start watching Youtube videos on flaring. May come to it, and its a valuable skill to have. If you learn it now, next time you won't jack with the nut, you'll just cut it off, flare and move to the next issue. _________________ Always chasing Squirrel's. |
