I've been reading through the earliest VW forums here and focusing up on the coachbuilts and specials. Everyone covets a Heb but the D&S and the Denzels really torque my screws. I decided to go through a stack of old 'Dune Buggies & Hot VW's' that I had stashed in one of the shop shelves. I had nearly all the July 'Vintage Special' issues from the first in 83 to about 99. Going through them I found an interesting article in the 1989 issue about a former Okie who found a Denzel engine in an Oklahoma salvage. It's probably been posted here before but I've not run across it yet so I scanned it to post.
It took me back to the mid-1970's when I had my first VW, a 67 T3 'Fastback'. I needed some parts and the first time I went to Tulsa I went to Nate's VW Salvage & Garage northeast of Tulsa. I needed a rear quarterpanel for the T3 and Nate's was a 'U Pull It & Save Some $$' Salvage' so I headed up on the hill to find a panel. I recall that there was a Split sedan sitting flat on the ground with no suspension and a number of earlier T2's. All these were just stuck out in among the trees & rocks up in the woods. There was a little wooden building about six feet square that looked like it had never had a paint brush touched to it. The door was half hanging off and I pulled it open. I don't remember what other parts & junk was in there but there was a 36hp Okrasa engine sitting in the floor right inside the door. As I remember, a few pieces of tin were gone but otherwise it looked pretty complete. I really didn't know what it was so asked Nate about it when I got back to the front of the yard. He said it was an Okrasa and he wanted $100 for it. Dang !! If only I knew what I know now.
