I could be wrong, but I believe this same relay was also used on Buses, which had combined brake/turn signals, and needed different wiring as a result. |

I’m not 100% certain, but I think 54 and 54f are not used on the Type 3. But I think they are used in the buses. As was noted in a previous post here, these relays were used across different models so not all terminals are used on all models.
The same is true when you get to the EF relay. My type 3 has unused terminals on the EF relay, but that same relay was used on the busses and fir busses all of the terminals were used. |

Also remembered that somebody had previously disected the 9 pin box and did a write up on it. You can find that here:
http://type2.com/library/electris/vw-9prong.html
Note that this person was looking at it from the perspective of a Type 2 owner, so again, some of the narrative won’t apply to your car. |

54 and 54f are used for brake circuits on the T2, IIRC - those are not used on the Type 3 via the blue box. Only 7 of the pins are used for the Type 3.
I've found the easiest wiring diagram to use is for the 67 model year when referencing the 9 pin box.

Sorry, I'm no help..
My car never had one of those, just a regular old flasher can.
The 9-pin was needed to make 4-way flashers happen,
And i decided that those weren't really needed.
Early cars got away without them so what the hey..
Still,
Maybe one day if you're on the side of the road for some reason they'll save your life. _________________ Bus Motor Build

In most applications, those 9-pin boxes grounded though the mounting screw in the center, so make sure that is clean and tight (scrape off paint if necessary) for proper operation. |

I think so. It's been a while since I've worked on a 70 and earlier car.
You did scrape the paint off around the screw (ground) hole right? If not it might not work. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
