All-
Do most use a shepherds hook steel vacuum line to their carburetor? Are they needed?
If so, I saw the video on how to make, but do any vw vendors sell them?
Thanks

It's nothing fancy. You can simply loop the hose higher than the vacuum port or make one out of metal tubing. _________________ Glenn

Needed if one wants the vacuum advance not to fill with gasoline. Rubber diaphragm does not do well in the long term by being soaked with fuel. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

From the 1960's the diaphragm is actually made of a speaker cone like paper- even more vulnerable.
I would say most do not know about them, yes they are needed, I've had NOS in the past and good used off and on and yes there are vendors that have them. _________________ Roads Scholar &

There was an evolution to the line and not always in the shape of a shepherds crook.

From my experience the advance line was still a "shepherds crook" but the retard side was not. _________________ Roads Scholar &

You know more than I, so I double checked looking at old brochures and you are correct, they used them even on the ones with the advance port located at 7 o’clock.
Guess what I am going to be doing this morning… _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

What size metal line is common? Can a normal brake line work? 3/8" |

2mm which is about .080" (80/1,000 of an inch).
3/8" is .375" (375/1,000 of an inch) _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Thanks..... to be clear, you are saying 2mm is the correct size and not the 3/8" |

VW ones have nipples like this on the ends:
You will see aftermarket ones where they just trim a piece of tube off. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]
