Got a few bits and pieces on the shelf ready to go in along with the Engine
Among which are new Empi tarboard, a refurbished Speedometer, a Kenwood Bluetooth system, and a Swamp Cooler. The Swamp Cooler and Kenwood gear was flown over from the States, by guys from the US that I work at the Plant with from Pittsburgh and North Carolina.
Also got deluxe window rubbers and trims, as currently have ‘Cal look’ ones which I’d like to change out. Finally once engine is in, I have a really nice Vintage Speed shifter and all new bushes to fit 😆

Stupid question time (because these things don't work in humid areas): Can the swamp cooler be mounted on either side? _________________ Brian

Very nice! I like the gauges and you have the big 3 - oil pressure, temp and tach.
I'm sure too it will have nice tunes with the Bluetooth setup.
I'm wishing these days I had drilled and tapped my big bore 40hp for full flow and installed the swamp cooler at the same time. It runs well, but flirts with 220-230 in the summer. |

Hi Q-Dog
I’m a RHD as I’m in the UK 😆
So I’ll be mounting it on my Driver’s side, your Passenger side. I believe that’s the side it should be on
I’m not using it to cool, just to look cool 😆😆😆
Well some might not agree !!
This is the sort of look I’m after.

Been a bit stalled due to Covid-19, but we decided to have another hack of the Bug to see if we can make some progress on the Engine. Have got a new rear Apron, and was going to make that removable with Zeus clips, have decided to cut back the body work, and weld to the Apron to make a fully removable rear section, so we started that today, still loads of work to do, Engine Bay prep, and repaint, and new tarboard, seals etc, so just a fit up really. Took quite a few photos to share

Photos are obviously not in order, but the Bug started to look a bit like a Baja at one point

Well, it’s almost a year to the day, that I last posted.😩
COVID has ruined the last year, and my Bug has sat patiently waiting for the work to complete.
Last 2 weeks have been getting the engine in, and she’s finally running 😂😂
Now back out, and some more mucking about trying to make a removable apron, still a bit of work to do this weekend, but planning on painting on Monday then it’s engine back in, and put it all back together. I’m going to ditch the tarboard, and just painting the bulkhead, but have bought a load of 4mm silent coat, and the 6mm silent coat isolation sheets to stick over that. I’ve been taking photos of what’s been going on, so here’s some random shots.
PS engine is running like a sewing machine 😂 and sounds awesome 🤩 hope you guys like it, it’s not for the purists though 🤔😱

All the glass is out as well, and new deluxe rubber and metal trims to go back in as well.
She’s accumulated a lot of dust in the workshop in the last year 😬

If you ever get to make your trip.....blow the horn and wave as you go by in Vicksburg.
The primary thing to see here is civil war history.
Nice project car by the way.
Have fun. _________________

No deflector tins under the heads either.
Murt, both the deflector and sled tins need to be installed. If not the engine will not properly cool and you’ll roast it in time. _________________ __________

Thanks for that @Cusser, @richparker I’ll be sorting that then, that engine has cost me a pretty penny, and for sure want to keep it cool 😎 _________________ 1966 VW Beetle ‘Jules’

Chaps
On the under tin issue, I just wanted some advice please ??
This is a stock photo of the 3 piece under tin set I have, that I'm getting painted.
As for deflectors, I was planning on just wrapping the pipes underneath. I have searched the forum, and found this photo of a homemade deflector ? Do you think I should use these as well ? Cheers

Hi @richparker
Thanks for that, No I don't have lower cylinder deflector tins fitted.
This is a newly built unit, (Brazilian AS41). I have all the tins on my original 1200cc engine (D0 0295026) , but not sure if these can be taken off cleaned painted and fitted to the new engine ? I don't know of a reason why not ?
The dilemma I have, is that I had the engine built for me here in the UK new case, Fomoco heads, Dells, etc etc, and I think the builder did a great job, and the engine was run up/bench tested to my satisfaction prior to my collecting it. I brought it home, and there was somewhat of a pause before fitting, and then of course Covid hit here we are 1 year later and ready to fit, but unfortunately the engine builder sadly passed away last May, and so I can't go back to ask further questions.
PS: I also have remote Oil cooler/Fan fitted
Cheers

Murt, the deflector tins are the square ones between the pushrod tubes and the cylinders (it looks lime you have them installed), the other tin that you are missing is the sled tins (and industrial tins to fill the gap from no heater boxes). _________________ Pres.
