I have seen rear foglights on type 3s before but didn't really understand what they were for until I bought a 2002 911 (996 C4) and people kept telling me I had a bulb out on the rear right side of off the car. Then I was informed it just a brighter red light on the drivers side of the car and in some countries it is mandatory .
So my question is - was there another position on the light switch, or would you have another switch to turn it on? _________________ Tom Reay

Rear fog lights are mandatory in most (all?) European countries. Probably others as well.
In Canada, they are optional and almost all cars sold here do not have them (our Volvo does have one).
On the Volvo, the switch is integrated with the light switch.
On my Type 1, which I bought in the UK, a separate switch was installed for the rear fog light:
Here's a pic of the rear fog light, I 'matched' it with the same style Hella light on the right side (for reverse):

Some foglamp switches have three positions: Off, Front, front and rear. |

No, the it would be a red tail light on the driver's side to make the car more visible when it's foggy. _________________ Tom Reay

There is a specification on the distance the light should be mounted (from the brake lights). It may differ in your state (from the spec that came with my rear fog light):
