The guy who is restoring Birdie scored a major find at a VW swap this past weekend. This front end is in much better shape then the current swiss cheese one. More progress step-by-step.

Last week I was told by the shopkeeper that Birdie is now front-and-center for restoration completion. Birdie's been moved from his long-term hiding spot, so I'm hopeful.

It's been 10 months since my last update. Birdie seems to be front-and-center at the shop, and since it's been 3½ years there, it's nice to see more progress.
More body work. It turns out that the nose bought in June 2021 didn't fit correctly, so another nose was found and fitted December 2021. Also, firewall was completely replaced.
Finally primer applied Jan-Feb 2022!!!
And, in June 2022 finally the L630 Cobalt Blue paint is being applied!!!
Andy, the body and paint guy is very detail oriented, which is much appreciated.

What was put in the front trunk area to give it the rough texture? _________________ Joe P.

I forget what exactly it is, but was told it will help Birdie not to have that typical tinny Type 3 sound while driving. Is "tinny" a word? Ha, ha!

Um... Um... Man, you need to get your Squareback running better. Adjust those carbs. _________________ 1970 VW Type 3 Squareback - Cobalt Blue (Birdie)

Getting there, it wasnt drive-able when I started. I have never even ridden in another vw aircooled engined car, let alone a dual carbd/cammed one, so my expectations are pretty low. Been focusing on electrical issues which is why I was asking if you knew a local engine guy.
Btw,I thought the event was really well run, hope to see Birdie at the next one. |

I was given a nasty, expensive surprise this month. I had bought Birdie in Sept 2018. One of the main reasons that I bought this Squareback is that according to the previous owner the newly rebuilt 1776cc engine had only 1,200 miles on it. As Birdie is being put together (almost 5 years in the shop so far in Illinois!), I decided that I wanted hydraulic lifters installed, which also meant a different camshaft. So the engine was pulled and taken over to a VW air-cooled engine shop for the work.
That's when this nasty surprise was found. The engine had an ear welded onto the case! In the picture with the drawings and numbers, the welds are encircled in blue with a #4. In the picture #1 is a weld over a "new" oil passage, where the original oil passage is capped at #2. At #3 is the beginning of a crack in the case, which looks like would only get worse and eventually fail. Brass ports are added at #5. Also, the case has an excessively large line bore, which means that the main bearings are way oversized.
I'm glad this was found now, rather than when I got Birdie back and I had an engine failure. I will need a new case, and thus, a freshly rebuilt 1776cc engine at a cost of over $4K. Thanks a LOT previous owner for your horible workmanship!!

Wow what a bummer. But at least it was discovered at this stage of the game and not catastrophic failure out in the road.
Hoping it’s all smooth sailing from here. |

Agreed. It might be time to go to an all aluminum engine case, so that blocks can be easily added for the oil line fittings. It would also be easier to make any repairs to the case in the future. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Here's the rebuilt engine with a new case and flywheel. No more welded on, cracking ears to cause future problems.
