So I tend to be pretty good with wiring. I have fully wired about 6 cars (domestic) and have handled some import stuff, so why is the fastback kicking my a$$?

I have been on the technical page and have done forum searches but am still scratching my head.

I have the meter out but no continuity yet in the wires I am checking, so.....

I am trying to identify two wires at the battery.
; an approximate 10 gauge black wire with a 40 amp fuse heading to the front of the car. It's got a 1/4 inch eyelet and it's by the positive terminal. (I hate hot wires that are black). It's in a bundle with a white, yellow, and red.

The second wire is a tan wire approximately 18 gauge that goes back through the firewall. Its shielded and the wiring clips holding it place it at the negative terminal with a female end.

And finally, this orphan that's in the engine compartment driver side near the generator that is white with green striping:

Also, could someone recommend a good color-coded diagram source for the 73? The stock 73 diagram is a puzzle and the 71 while more helpful seems to be different enough that some things won't be clear.

BTW, I ordered the Bentley manual, but USPS has it buried somewhere in the southeast.

I just ordered 25 feet of ethanol safe 5/16 hose and 40 FI clamps to refresh the fuel lines, but before I even think about trying to get her started, I need to figure out the wiring.

Thanks for the help, the fastback is making me feel like a novice at the moment.

I'm guessing that at one time your car had air conditioning. At least the first picture by the battery looks like the typical AC loom.

You are right. Its an AC car. I thought the vents were for fresh air or addl heat, but I checked the owners manual and I see that its AC, so the extra harness is the AC harness.

That's a beautiful unit you have, what ever you do don't break it or throw it away. This is what I had to start with when I put ac in my Squareback.

Well folks I am stumped. And I hate stumped. The wiring in this type 3 is killing me. The schematics are odd and I cant find any type of color match on the casing.

And I used to think I was good at wiring. I have been humbled by VW.

So I have the AC harness dealt with. And I hooked up a brown wire located at the negative terminal and nothing exploded. So far so good.

So I have these two orphans which I cant sort.

Mystery Wire 1 is a clipped red right at the old pressure sender. (sender seems to have an extension added to it). red wire Appears 16-18 gauge.

Any good guesses?

Mystery Wire 2 is a disconnected wire coming from a group that dumps at the generator. It's coming from inside the cabin. It looks to be tan with green bands which is propped against a screwdriver in the pic.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Dave

Thank you! I will cap it. and make a note.

Hopefully, someone can help me with the tan green. I want to identify everything before I start throwing juice through the system.

I think that wire is actually grey/ green and can be found in current track 50/51 on the 1973 current flow diagram. It went to position 13 in the big plastic "VW Diagnosis" plug to show function of the ignition coil.

The "VW Diagnosis" system wires tend to have "dots" like that rather than tracers.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Tram.

That makes sense since the PO installed an MSD 5 spark box and a pertronix module. Probably left disconnected due to the mod.

Guess I am being AR on checking leads.

BTW I have been reading all of your posts on FI - Good informative stuff.

Thanks, Dave
