Update on the fuel consumption and performance.

I have set the timing to factory spec 10 BTDC, installed Bosh +4 platinum plugs, removed the "bee catcher" thingy from the intake (Syncro engine) and replaced my steel wheels with 16'' Mercedes CLK forged alloys. With the new wheel/tire combo the Westy turns 4000 rpm at 73mph and engine really seems to like to taller tires. I have been using my Westy as a daily driver for over a month and am averaging 20-21 mpg in Atlanta traffic. Steady highway travel at around 75 with vacation and people load, which includes my small trailer, will return 19 mpg. I've had the Westy up to 85 mph with more to go, but that's just silly speed in a two-ton box.

I'm still running the secondary ECU which has an emission-control function, so the engine has a catalytic converter and an O2 sensor.

That's why we shift gear with our left hand, so as we can still do battle with our sword arms. "Once more into the drive-thru my friends, once more!!"

Anyone know what coil the DJ uses?

Update on Rotor cap and rotor button.

The rotor button is Bosch 04038 (part #1 234 332 300-0U1), which is a 1.9L WBX part.

The distributor cap is Bosch 03214 (part # 1 235 522 375-0U1), which is a 2.1L WBX part.

The rotor button has an extra-wide front contact area over the 2.1L rotor due to greater range of ignition advance function.

I looked into this 4-5 years ago. I could only find used or NOS and while I can’t remember the price, I remember it was very, very high.

Try Lars at Tristar connection in Germany. I bought a set from him. OE German KB. Not cheap, but beautiful pistons.

All these specs are right here for those who'd like to compare:

http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpecific/T3/info/enginedata/engine.htm

The DJ and MV use the identical cam and heads, so the big diff internally is the pistons (shallow dishes, about 35cc if I recall). The independent ignition apparently has a much more aggressive advance curve as David's experiments show, but although the advance specs are there for the DJ it's hard to compare because the Digifant timing maps aren't available. That leaves the Digijet ECU, so what I'd like to know is the P/N on those DJ ECU's to see if they're different from the DH brain.

Oh, no lambda either.

The DJ-code ECU part number is 025 906 021E. DH ECU is 025 906 021F, as you know.

I'd like to cross-reference the distributor part number with US DH engine, but so far I see that it is a unique part from MV and 1.9l DG as well. Ignition coil and starter have unique part numbers also.

Does anyone know if the connecting rods are same as MV engines?

Thats not true. 025 906 021F is for DJ Manual Transmissions and 025 906 021E is for automatic. The 1.9 Digijets run on 025 906 021C

Just found these:

https://tk-carparts.de/kolben-und-zylinder-satz-82-kw-112-ps-025198075c

$776.71 plus tax+shipping

So is it true one could put these in an MV engine and they work fine? Or do I need all the engine controls electronics and a DJ distributor?

Thanks

I’ve been running DJ’s with a standard MV injection system. Mine had a DJ Digijet on it when I bought it.
I’ve not noticed any difference. It does not ping or do odd thing. I don’t really drive it hard as it’s in a 5700 lb Syncro.
A nice Factory engineered part that just works as it should.

Wonder what the real compression ration is...

Reported to be:

10:1 here:
http://www.vwvanagoncamper.com/features-specifications/

10.3:1 here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Type_2_(T3)

10.5:1 in the original post above.

Do I hear 11:1? Shocked

Hello All,

In planing an MV rebuild with DJ pistons it occurred to me these pistons may interfere with aftermarket 1.25 ratio rockers.

Can anyone confirm compatibility? One way is to simply measure my MV pistons compared to stock, but I don’t have them out yet.

Thank you,
R

You need the Digifant wiring harness to install the Digifant ECU, but otherwise it can be done.
