I have a 1967 Squareback and a mechanic friend managed to break off the turn signal lever. It has a dimmer switch built in and two wires. Got one from Spain which did not fit. The contacts and cancelling mechanism were wrong. Any suggestions?

There are two different manufacturers of the turn signal switch. SWF is one of them and I forget what the other is, but they don’t interchange. So look at your old one and find the manufacturer stamp then buy a replacement of the same manufacturer, and prepare to pay up (or rather to make your clumsy friend pay up).

Yep. Just be glad it's not a type34

There are used ones in the classifieds. Good luck!

I sympathize with you. The same situation happened to me over 30 years ago on my Type 3. Like in your case, a mechanic reached in through the open window while I was sitting in the driver's seat and turned my turn signal on, breaking the lever. He "fixed" it in short order by inserting a metal rod in the cavity of the arm and applying what was probably an epoxy over the lever's broken ends. The epoxy was black like the lever.

I thought about making him pay for a new lever but even as long ago as the early '90s a new lever, or even one from a junkyard, would have been hard to come by and probably not worth the effort. So being the nice guy I am I let it slide. It's not like my VW has ever looked like a show car.

I remember being at an auto show for the new 1969 models and sitting behind the wheel of an American car that had a broken turn signal lever. Stuff like that happens but we rarely hear about it. Mad

SWF and Koln (aka "circle K")

The SWF is more common and parts are easier to find - they're MFG specific because the designs are just different enough to not interchange.
