Hello,
Requesting some advice from you all...please, want to be safe.
I am planning a trip from Tx to VA/DC area. I have a 2010 Dbl Cab 4x4, and thinking of towing my 1987 VW Westfalia Camper (with a Uhaul) trailer.
I checked the data on the Tacoma 4x4 capacity with factory tow package, it displays 5034kg or 11,000 lbs.
the VW Westy camper is roughly about 4300 lbs???
will this be safe?
Go Fast Slowly...of course on the highway...

that may be the total gvwr
but a quick google suggests a 2010 tacoma can tow 3500lbs. not even close to hauling a westy
and in fact their reservation system says "not recommended" for that combo, which in my experience means they wont let you leave with the trailer.
YMMV though depending on your local uhaul _________________ MegaSquirt resource - SpitfireEFI.com

I thought about doing the same with my Xterra
A better option would be for you to rent a uhaul truck/trailer in Va drive that back to Tx
One ways can be much cheaper if the drop off is a low vol area
Though in ur case it may be a wash

Tacoma will definitely not tow 11,000 lbs. driving the Westy is yo best/safer option . _________________ 1973 Westy (shared birthday)

And more fun in my humble opinion.
Why thinking of towing and not driving it? _________________ '91 Westfalia, Bordeaux Red Pearl 2.1L 2wd Auto

Consider shipping the Toyota and driving the Vanagon. |

A dolly is a lot lighter than a trailer, so that would get your weight down.
My 1990 Toyota V6 pickup will tow 3500#, I would think your 2010 would haul more safely enough.
Having a buddy drive it down for you and then fly back would be another option. |

Why 2 trips? You need both vehicles up here? Get 2 drivers?
A dolly is a good option like Wildthings said. Also consider flat towing. _________________ '87 Syncro

This worked for me. Highlander flat towing a tintop.. so a little less on both vehicle weights..

I needed my Syncro Westy and my 2002 Chevy pickup moved from Houston to Northern Wisconsin. I knew the Westy could be towed on the UHaul car hauler flatbed so I figured the Chevy could handle the heavy lifting. Not the easiest trip I’ve ever made and at 9.2 MPG @ 65 MPH, it was a long journey. It took me about 2 full days to make the trip with an overnight stop in Arkansas. The truck is rated to tow 10,000lbs but it was working hard the entire trip. If I did it again I’d use a diesel 1 ton truck for more power and better brakes.

Gas engines and trucks don't mix well. All trucks/vans should be diesel. _________________ Casey--
