Just got her last week. Longtime dream and finally decided it’s now or never. She has had a lot of work done but needs to be finished up. Body is supposed to be a final prep stage before paint. Whatever that means...sure she needs more but a great starting point for me. Came with new KF metal for the back seat floor, sub floor and the rear rear bed. I’ve decided to tackle the bed rails and support beams first. Everything under the truck has been done. New brakes, suspension, 68 trans and long axles, and finally a new 2275cc motor shimmed for pump gas. And yes it’s fun!

More to come but I wanted to get this started and be able to document from now until completion.

For the bed rails I’ve decided to strip to bare metal. Clean clean clean and then spray with Eastwood’s epoxy primer and then their black chassis paint. At least that’s the plan. Or use their chassis primer and chassis paint. Once that’s done I’ll tackle the engine bay and the rear of the bottom floor. Path forward on that not yet figured out but will be back to dove blue.

Anyway comments, suggestions, etc greatly appreciated. I’m in Point Pleasant Nj so if anyone is near feel free to contact me and come by. More info, pics, etc to come.

More photos. The PO bought maybe 8 years ago as shown when some of the panels were black. For the most part it was just a shell having had most of the metal work done. He restored from that point to where she is now. Fully running etc...now I’ve gotta take her the last stretch.

So first up are the bed support rails. Apologies if I don’t name everything properly. Most experience is with aircooled Porsches.

For the support rails and please correct me or recommend anything at all. Gonna take them to bare metal then epoxy primer and black satin finish. Basically to match the underside. Then I’ll move on to the engine bay and rear of the floor below the bed. Which I haven’t decided to go all the way to bare metal or not. But probably will. I also plan to either bolt the bed down rather than welding so that I can access the motor and every other area below the bed in the future with ease. And to maybe install a 911 motor one day.

Bare metal, rough with 80grit, clean, epoxy primer, then paint...sound right?

When PO bought I believe.

First time for everything. Sanded a small area to test. Used 60 and 80 grit. Cleaned several times. Then used 400 to rough a bit. Cleaned again. Shot with Eastwood black chassis primer. We will see in the morning. Not sure if I have to shin and sand the metal down as much as I did but I guess it can’t hurt.

I wouldn’t bolt the bed down. I imagine it’s structural and should be welded. If you want to access the engine from above you’d have to cut one of the support beams.

Making progress slowly. Few questions if anyone can help. Before epoxy priming do I need to clean out every little scab scratch hole like the ones in the picture? Amd do I need to use so type of rust product on it before priming?

Or just clean really good and then throw on the epoxy primer?

Put a sunroof and skylights in!

Ditto a 4th,left-hand door! Maybe walkthrough seats.

i like your sense of humor Smile

walkthrough is fine but really not necessary, especially if you put a 4th door.

4th door should be suicide like VW did for RHD buses in UK, South Africa or Australia.

fake sunroof and windows are for posers.

Suggestions needed. Think with the motor I’m running I’d like to install disc brakes. I know there are threads that go through all this in detail...thinking 944 discs up front. Not super knowledgeable about VW but have a lot of experience with Porsches and access to parts. What I know about how it’s set up now. 68 bug trans with long axles. 2275cc motor bubble case. Believe the front is 2 or 4 inch narrowed beam. Drum brakes al around. Just doesn’t stop like it should even with drums. Pics below of the suspension brakes etc. Think the front right shock might be shot as well. So suggestions on discs up front and leave drums on rear. And upgraded shocks primarily up front. Again I’m not 100% sure exactly what I have...

Looks like a solid place to start. Just my 2 cents... Move that oil cooler up out of the way. The last thing you want to do is rip that thing off and be stranded somewhere.

A little update. Every time I hit a small bump the passenger side front tire hits the top of the wheel well. Rather annoying and at worst scary. Ordered new koni 80-1348 shocks for the front initially thinking maybe the cofab shock failed. Plus think it’s a nice upgrade as well. Taking the shock off now to see if it’s toast and if it is hopefully the new ones will fix that problem. What else could be causing it? Broken leaves etc? I’ll add pics in a bit hoping some of you may see something wrong just by looking. I’m not that familiar with all the parts to noticed yet.

Also got a new VDO oil temp gauge.

No more bottoming out?
I assumed it would be something else like broken leaves but was waiting to see what other more knowledgeable people theorized

Did the Cofab shock seem bad?

I wouldn’t say that issue is totally gone but WAY less. I only changed the front shocks to. Right side is still 3/4 inch or so lower so have to check the leaves or something else. I can tell the rear spring plates aren’t exactly in the same position or level either. Could just be that. Trying to get away from reindex the torsion bars…maybe grab some adjustable spring plates I don’t know.
