before I go any further I just wanted to check - the new bearing has a groove and a c-clip. I assume I can just remove the clip and use as-is. My car is a '63 Ghia so as the bearing box states it is for other types too I'm assuming the retainer is required on other models but not a type 1. Is that correct?

That bearing is made for a transmission application. Yes same overall dimensions as an axle bearing, just has a groove.
You can use it as an axle bearing but be sure to install with groove inside the axle tube/towards the trans otherwise the o-ring/gasket/bearing cap won't seal.
