Here's a pic of the seal installed even tho it is one of those nasty dual lip seals, (thanks to hazetguy)
You can see it does not sit flush with the case.

Read here about having to trim the double lip seal Laughing

Reviving this thread a bit as I have a main seal leak on a new seal. It is a "dual Lip" seal and I was reading over on the 356 forum that the dual lip seals will leak and the Porsche guys are cutting the second lip off of them. Is this my likely problem? Are folks cutting the second lip off so it doesn't burn and fail?
see: http://forum.porsche356registry.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=44170
Thanks, Doug

When I refreshed my 36 hp, I originally installed a dual lip seal that I got from Wolfsburg West. Even though I was very careful I still messed it up when I installed my flywheel. So after I pulled the engine again I ended up buying a "cheapo" single lip seal from Autozone since I didn't want to wait for a new seal from WW. Over 10,000 miles later it's still nice and dry!

Wolfsburg West has orange - brown flywheel seals that work good. What color seals are you using.

I dont remember what color the seal in there is, but I'll be pulling it next weekend. For what its worth, it was purchased from WW.

quick question...

I am re-setting the end float... engine was built, not by me, WITHOUT the paper gasket and only 2 shims... 0.32mm and 0.34mm total =0.66mm

The paper gasket is currently unavailable in the UK. I found one in my shed and punched extra holes in for the 8 dowels and I plan to use this.

Obviously this will crush down from the 0.2mm thickness it has right now... but will still allow me to put in 2 shims @ 0.24mm and 1 @ 0.34 total 0.82mm-0.15(est?) =0.67mm with some adjustment depending on the crush of the paper gasket, and the correct 3 shims.

so... as I only have one gasket, and can't get any more, I will have to reuse it after the first test fit. Will this be ok???

Only if you put the flywheel on with the same orientation to the crankshaft will you have a good chance of that. Otherwise, could be.....

Easy enough to find some gasket material to make another from. Heck over here one can use phone book paper.

yep. however stamping 4 holes in with having the original 4 for reference made me nervous enough, let alone cutting the big holes too... I do have some much thicker (0.6mm) coming in the post. maybe they will crush down a lot and work well.
