I've read the change happened in 1958 but does anyone know what month? I have a 58 (9/57) Kombi and just want to make sure I have the right seat. |

Either the "Progressive Refinements" or the "Type 2 Parts Reference" manuals are a must for questions like that.

Yeah, that reference in P.R. was for a change on a Type 1 beetle chassis number, not a Type 2 Bus chassis number. Anyone know for sure when the Bus seat shape happened?

Howdy Mr. May,
I think he is referring to the change from the black upholstery fairly "flat shaped profile" backrest to the grey upholstered backrests in late '58 through 60-61 with the curved profile. Not the "humpback style seats later in '62 or so...

Judging by the post title I took it as the switch from the flat back seat tops to the curved back ones. Was this change the same for commercials and standards/deluxes? I have wondered this as well. The only interior that my 5/57 Standard had in it when I bought it was the flat back front seat top. I figured it would be highly unlikely that all the seats were gone and a PO just so happened to find the correct color for the model seat top but from an earlier bus. With this assumption in mind I have since found both original upholstery rear seats. I to am very curious as to when the change was made from the flat back seats to the curved ones. _________________ 58 Coral Red ragtop(Diana's car)

Reviving an old thread - sorry.
Figured I would utilize this thread since there is already good information here.
I have a '57 PGSG Standard and I am trying to determine the correct front seat backrest. I bought the bus already stripped and disassembled, but trying to determine which front seat backrest is correct for the bus.
The bus was built in April '57. VIN is 256946.
Despite being made the same month, it also missed the end of the Bubble Tail Lights/Third Brake Light Decklid which transitioned at 246964 (another April '57 change).
It had a later humpback seat in the bus when I purchased it and trying to determine which seat I need to replace it with.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!

I had a very original August 1957 panel that had a flat back seat. I believe the change to curved back was in the fall of 1957. _________________ .

Just to pile on, my 59 SC has curved back seats. The frames looked OG to me.

Thank you for the information, Lind. That was super helpful. I will source the correct "flat back" backrest for it. |

Why does that truck have a 3 position seat mount for a humpback seat? |

It's not a hump back. It's a curved back. 😉
A previous owner made quite a few modifications to the seat mounts, both by adding extra adjustment to the back by putting those ugly fixings in with a rather crudely welded mount, and also adding a piece of angle iron at the bottom to increase leg room. I'm probably going to cut those extra adjustments off of the top before somebody gets gutted climbing into the truck, but the angle iron mod is going to stay because I'm 6'2" and need the legroom. _________________ 1959 Single Cab “Otto”
