It has been a couple decades since I owned an Air-Cooled VW, then this '68 fell in my lap. It was hot-rodded out years ago and other than being parked for 15 or so years, it is fairly complete.
Initial plan is to clean it up, get it running then look into setting it up as a streetable period rally car.

First order of business should be to get that Weber BBQ- I mean "carburetor"- off there and use it to hone your shot put abilities. Go with Solex duals or even go back to fuel injection as God intended.

Well if one is bad, two should be even worse. I have a pair of 44's on the shelf. This car is a long way from stock, and will never be a concourse winner. And that is OK |

Not missing. The previous owner modified the engine deck to accommodate putting in type 1 tins, carbs on stacks, etc.
With the car came all the spares, bench stock and a bunch of other parts for other cars, so I am good there. I have an ad posted for the stuff I know I am not going to need. |

I'm diggin that front end though. Sadly, that progressive is a great carb, just not on a type3. I agree that EFI is much more gooder. Can't wait to see what you do with it. _________________ It's not the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop at the bottom.

I am curious, why do you say "not on a type 3"?
My cousin, another gearhead, built a custom EFI setup on a carb model 78 Datsun 280z. It was an amazing project to watch take shape, but is was a ridiculous undertaking. While I agree that anything is possible, one has to ask if the juice is worth really the squeeze? Personally, I am comfortable with carbs. making dual mikunis sing on a British Twin is all in a day work, so I see this as no different. |

Probably because it doesn't fit without either removing or putting a hole in the engine cover. In a type 3.

I see. Well the engine bay has already been modified to accommodate Type 1 engine tins and manifolds. I agree that it would be dumb to do this to a surviving stock car, but since the damage is done I see no harm in dropping the DelOrtos in. |

The Dells would be great, but yes, the progressive just fitting underneath is an issue. Even if it were modified, I'd try to revert it is all. The progressive is a decent carb, I have one on Opal my 67, and it's great. _________________ It's not the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop at the bottom.

That's good to know. Thanks for the info.
I have done exactly one full restoration in my life and finishing it took all the fun out of that machine for me. It was too nice to ride at that point. I don't knock the resto community, it is just not my thing. I mostly work on vintage racing machines now because race rigs are just so much more fun and I am not afraid of getting it dirty. There are plenty of concourse ready type 3's out there, the world does not need one more. Now a rally prepped Fastback that will be the coolest thing on the dunes since Chad's surplus Pinzgauer, I can be that guy. |

that's not type 1 tin, or cooling you have there.
Since it's been hacked already you have lots of room for a proper set of dual carbs, or some turbo tubing. The progressive will never run properly without manifold heat, it was just a poor excuse for an EFI replacement back in the olden days.

Hacked engine compartment & fiberglass front end looks like a drag car in the making.

Not to mention that those Weber progressive carbs were crap on the Vega's and Pinto's they were originally made for. They're basically a 1 barrel carb, with a linkage to open a "secondary" throttle blade. Dual single throat Weber ICTs are a much better choice. Even dual Dells or Weber's are better choices than the progressive.
At this point, it looks like you can do almost anything you want to do as far as the load floor goes. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

You are right, Type 3 tins have been reinstalled. At some point previously it had been set up with type 1 tins. These pics are as I got the car, so this is the starting point I am working from. Unless there is a legitimate reason (better cooling, ease of access, better performance, etc.) I will likely leave the tins as is and do have intention to run a dual carb setup. (see below)

Yup. Ideally you'd like to find some short intake manifolds to mount them to. That way the carbs don't eat into the space above your load floor.
Going off your photos, it looks like you're missing the type 3 generator (has a hole in the side of it for cooling air to enter it). It mounts on the saddle on the left side of the engine. Now depending on whether or not you want heat, you can either replace the silver tubes coming off the big shroud ends, or you can cap the ends with beer can bottoms and a hose clamp. This keeps the cooling air going to the engine for it to cool. If you decide you want heat, just replace those accordion tubes so air will flow thru the heat exchangers (it also helps pull heat from the heads), and sends the heat inside the car thru tubes from the heat exchangers to the body. kind of like this. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/type3...t_Heat.pdf
I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
