I was poking around and unfortunately for my wallet found what I think is a good deal on a 78 tin top. The owner says that the FI is still in place... which I love as my 79 Westy still has the FI in it and it's running well. I'm wondering though about a difference I see in the gauges on the dash. On the 78 there is a CAT warning light, on my 79 that same slot is taken up by an OXY light. Is that just a terminology difference in the years or would the presence of a CAT warning light indicate it's a CA instead of Federal? Going to take a look at it tomorrow night, just got me wondering. _________________ '79 Westy FI/AC/Auto

The door post sticker, as well as the one inside the decklid is the final answer. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Just looking at Ratwell, is there such a thing as a 78 CA or was it just 79? Chart seems to indicate 79 only.

BusDaddy gave you the correct answer, check and see what is on the vehicle. If you need to pass smog testing, what is stamped on the plates is what is going to count and not what some website says. |

'78 CA Bus has a catalytic converter, no O2 sensor.
'79 CA Bus has both.
Since the engine lid could hypothetically be changed easily, the unequivocal way to ID a CA model (as Dad says) is the sticker on the lower door pillar that says "CATAYLST".
CA models also have a sticker, referring to the catalyst, on the driver's windshield visor. _________________ SL |

Thanks guys. Going to take a look tomorrow night after work. What really concerns me is my wife is being supportive of this additional potential project _________________ '79 Westy FI/AC/Auto

Unless, of course, the bus has been repainted like mine, and there is no driver's door sticker any more... _________________ Ben

Thank you. After I went up and looked at it, it's not a CA. I'm actually picking it up today! _________________ '79 Westy FI/AC/Auto

just for the record
on 77 and 78 modals
there is really no difference between a ca bus and a fed bus
according to carl (R.I.P) the only difference was
part # on ecu
1976 federal buses have no cat
ca buses have a cat
79 ca buses have the 1 yr only ca only fi system that uses oxygen sensor
79 fed buses are the same as 77 and 78 _________________ order your BAY WINDOW T-SHIRT here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1526918

Perhaps you mean KARL? (German spelling!)
Karl Von Salzen aka aufever. Yes he was a piece of work and a gold panner!
One of the high points of my life to meet Karl and Ronnie (Feitelson) at Jerome Jamboree. I think 2005.
Karl was the LAST word on most of that stuff. _________________ Al Brase
