Hello - hoping someone with an '80-'83 (mine is '81) air-cooled can confirm or deny for me that this blue wire at the right rear is the alternator exciter wire. This blue wire is not bundled with the main alternator wires, which is the case with the later WBX - what is throwing me as well is that it has a factory male small plug, and all the pics of early alternators that I can find show the conventional female plug, same as the later vans.

I no longer have the original alternator to compare. Tho this line easily reaches the alternator, perhaps I am missing a single-wire, female-alternator-to-male-wiring-connector in the line - T1d in the Bentley?

Deeply appreciate any help!

Lee. I recall that the D+ wire on my '81 looks like that. I'm happy to have a look if you want.

Connect that wire to the frame then use a VOM at frame and pin 13 of T14 connector to instrument cluster. You should see continuity.

Neil.

ha ha. I totally understand. I've lost count of how many times I've had the cluster out and fuse box lowered.
