Another small update. Basically spent the day degreasing, pressure washing, grinding paint, and straightening out the dents.
Tomorrow is installing the new fuel line and closing up the pan from where I had to repair the clutch tube.
Made a little 2.5 hour trip, met a neat old VW head and picked up a bunch of engine tina super cheap.
Gonna remove the fresh air vents and replicate a type 181 shroud. |

All right, another a$$ kicker of a day but the sewer pipe is in. The straight swivels won’t be used on both ends, just in for reference. I pressure washed and broke down the transaxle so I can use it as a dummy box for clearance issue discoveries during fabrication.
On another note the bulk head plate under the tank will probably never be seen but it’s those little details that charge me up.
On to the next thing. |

New update.
Spent a little me replacing the seal channels as they weren’t in the best shape.
Bending them was a chore.
.
I’ll continue tomorrow after the primer is dry and weld them in place |

Outstanding work. Tell us more about the fuel line install. I have that on my "to do" list for my buggy. |

hardest part is basically getting the old fuel line out. It doesn’t have to come out but it does make it easier. I recommend taping up the leading end of the fuel line so as not to get dirt in it. I used bulk head fitting at the rear the car but you can just punch through pan and put a grommet where comes through. Either will work. |

Small update
Got all the weatherstrip retaining trim welding in. A little grinding and cleanup and that’s behind me.
Oh, almost forgot, found a set real IDA’s less than a hour from me. Super happy about that.

Small update:
Decided on drop spindles and disc brakes for the front to help slow this pig down after 12 second passes.
Got the king/link pins apart. Had to beat on them like they owed me money but they are apart.
Got the new bushings in and reamed. Everything is cleaned painted and ready to go back together.

Decided to clean up the steering box and reseal it.
Found all the parts at Wolfsburg West.
Internals were in great shape so it was a quick and dirty rebuild. All ready to go.

Nice job on the steering box! Bet you could make some money rebuilding original steering boxes and selling them in the classifieds.... People always looking for a good non-aftermarket steering box. _________________ .

Started mocking up brake master cylinder and brake lines. Once done I’ll take them all back off to polish the stainless lines. I bought a tubing flaring tool that sure made this job a breeze. Ive never been gray a flaring brake lines but this tool sure made me look like a pro. It does single, double, bubble and 37* flares.

Nice work with the brake lines. Are you running a new gas line as well?
In regards to the steering gearbox, there is a good thread on TheSamba here: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=660446 _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]
Classic Brands. Classic Quality.
Not all parts are made the same. NOS OE/OEM parts made mainly in West Germany, Early Germany, and Early Brazil are where VW produced the best quality parts and best fitting products.
