Hi folks, I'm new here so please be patient with me. It's been a long time since I had a dune buggy, and I decided it was time to build one more. It's no secret that nice old Bugs are hard to find for a cheap price anymore, and I wouldn't want to cut up a nice one for a buggy anyway. I bought a 71 Super Beetle dirt cheap, after talking with numerous knowledgeable Bug folks that told me that everything behind the Napoleon's hat is the same as a standard. I've already purchased a new frame head assembly for a 71 standard, and plan to weld it in place of the Super frame head. Once we got the body off, it was obvious the Napoleon's hat was a rusty mess too. Looking in the catalogs, I see that there is one for a standard, and one for a super. I'm assuming I should buy one for a standard, but what is the difference in the two? The flanges on the ends of the super look a little bigger to me. Is changing a super to a standard something that's done very often?

Thanks!

Dave

A standard Hat will have a place for two horizontal tubes to be mounted while a Super Beetle has A funny looking section that almost looks like flippers....And it is fairly flat.

You can easily cut them off and weld on the opposite.

I had it done to mine although mine was just a standard to standard due to the original being bent up from abuse due to being a baja bug in it's former life.

Any decent fab guy should be able to take care of that for you. I watched in awe as a professional Fab guy whipped mine off and welded the new one on in about an hour.
