About the only way to fix it is to use the turn signal switch from a 72-73, as the 71 is a 1 year only part. The 72-73 version usually has the wiper switch assembly with it (uses longer metal sleeves and screws to hold it in place). You use the shorter 71 and earlier sleeves and screws to hold the 72-73 assembly in place on your 71.
The other option is to use the 68-70 unit and have no horn (what those brass/copper wipers are for). |
Thanks! I figured as much. I don't use the horn but its nice to know i would have it.
How is the switch from jbugs? Its got mixed reviews |

Actually happened to me two days ago in my wifes car. Lifted truck almost got us. Honked, chick apologized and on her way. |

| I was reading through the boards about shift rod coupler trouble. I'm afraid im going to have to redrill the hockey stick. What's crazy to me is how the old coupler fit and this one that looks exactly the same makes the shift rod sit tight on the passenger side. Baffled |

Figured the issue with reverse....the shitty empi shifter. Bought a new CSP shifter and holy f. It shifts better than ever. Reverse goes in so good. Strong.
I think i need to replace the tranny mounts soon since it feels a bit clunky when i shift 3rd and 4th.
Also need to replace the whole exhaust. This one is bad. Also finally getting to drop the engine and tranny this weekend. Excited as a mf. Also I'm almost sure the heads are loose.

I'm going to tackle the electric wiring before i pull the engine out. Had to put everything on hold since I have been jumping shifts at work no set schedule and the summer has been brutal, barely cooled down to 105's so i shpuld be good. I don't know how east coasters do it woth the humidity and the freeze. Bless their hearts
Bought the how to "rebuild your vw engine" book. I think with this and the bentley i should be set with the assist of the forums and google. I always get nervous of making things worse. A lot of reading has made me more confident. Anyways here's the 71 part of the frankensquare and csp shifter.
Also your guys choice of exhaust? I like the vintage speed sport, csp python and a1 sidewinder. |

Taking of fenders rust don't seem too bad.. hopefully the rest look like this. The drivers rockers are done though.

Passenger side don't look too bad. Rear hatch floor looks good on drivers side and dead on the other. The clip at the bottom of the fender were the nut goes came off just like that

Most of that looks like standard equipment rust. I'd probably pull the rear side windows and see how far up and under it goes. The rest is just a matter of making some patches to repair it with.

Yes sir, looks pretty good actually compared to what I've seen on here .
I took the front driver fender off and no real rust every bolt came off nice and straight including the bumper. Master cylinder looks like crap and that thing is dripping oil.

Not bad at all i just don't jack about body work or welding.
Seems mostly good on the pass fender, hole on wheel well and on pass door. Bolt for bumper broke off  both heater channels are done. Abd seems to have been hit, nothing major. Pretty good so far. I kinda like the stripped look.

I'm going to take off as much rust as I can and have my buddy weld some patches. The only thing that really intimidates me is the freaking heater channels and rockers. 
My budget got way smaller since i had to buy a new ac unit.
Door hinge looks bad. Also a early front end conversion on a late requires welding and cutting right? Got plenty of rust there.

So for the first time dropping a vw engine, well completely taking out any engine it took me 3 hours . It was hot but most of my time was spent second guessing myself and getting the "safest" jackpoints.
The frankenback was a tad low so i just knowcked the engine of the jack and dragged it out.
Their seems to be oil all over this thing. Iam going to start replacing gaskets tomorrow. I really don't want to split the case but I'm afraid I'm going to have to.
And I fkn dropped not one but 2 wing nuts in the right carb |

Generator looks beat. The coil looked worse.

There was no shims. Is this ok? Leak doesn't seem to be coming from oil cooler
Dirty ass cooler.
Im guessing this is a cheap ass distributor? |

Cylinder came off when i took of the heads lol. The studs were loose, probably overheating was cost.
Pison #3 looks so bad. The cylinder also has a crack on it.
Probably gonna need a full rebuild on this. |
