Number 40 is a needle valve on the accelerator pump circuit. They sometimes get stuck in the body.

This is also a great manual on the PHN

As for fitting duals in the early engine bay, have a look at this thread I put together. It can be done, but the linkage on the carbs will rub at wide open.

It’s Per from Sweden. Search gallery under username Pelle.

just a heads up, the early engine bays are narrow compared to the later versions. You will need to cut the engine bay (not recommended) or cut the engine tin to fit dual carbs in to the engine bay. I believe that the carbs will need to be installed after the engine is in place

There's one dude in this forum that knows how to get the PDSIT carbs into a smaller early engine bay - can't for the life of me find the thread or post. It looked like a snug fit and required some minor modifications to the carbs - not the car, IIRC.

Thanks Jason, Awesome write up. Thanks for taking the time and having the energy to do all that fitting and engine swapping to test fit and share.
I stumbled across your thread on the what fits late last night searching PHN carbs and info.

Not going to cut up the bay just so carbs or anything can fit. But I am not against a couple well placed dents to clear linkage arm. Doubt a dent would ever get noticed on this car.

Some Swapmeet scores from the weekend. Most brought to show by friends as gifts or trades and a couple purchases in the Swap.

Early arms were a purchase score with Euro tails. Too cheap to pass on the tails, and Need the arms bad. Arms are tight too. Some Early bus bits came with that swap pile purchase.

Had a call out for a Left heat exchanger, buddy replied with a good one. Shows up with an NOS one for a very reasonable (used) price.

While it was too darn hot and Swap sales were very low it made a great day to get some needed parts for the Notch.

Still been busy on the car. Dug into the trunk to somewhat clean it out and assess whats needed, get gas tank out. It sure was a Busy place for the past 25 years. At least i have the jack and early washer tank.

Wanted to pull tank to check condition. Thought it wasnt too bad but found out that was Wrong. Its shot. Real thin and leaking at the driver side, flat area. Not where the bottom usually goes at the fitting. Might have a line on another tank already. Fingers crossed

Bought some new tools. Neway clones on the cheap. Work real well considering the price compared to the real deal. I now live too far to justify borrowing my buddys seat cutting tools. Time to invest in my own.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So took a step backward and took heads off the engine for a real refurb.
Did a quick practice head before these. Not too bad. Sure beats the powered stone grinder I have used in the past. Minimal material removal with these by hand.
Heads are low mileage Mexico SP I dug out of the stash. But the intake seats seem to get warped slightly after some heat cycles. Had the same issue on the SP engine I put together in the 68 bus couple years ago on another set of low mileage heads.
Hard to see in the pics but that is 3 angle cut. Not lapped. Only lapped one exhaust and it sealed perfect with little effort. Said fuggit on lapping the rest, will seal up after 2min runtime. Only took about 6 hours to take apart do the head work and reassemble, while it's still on the stand.
Yeah, little rust on the spark plug... NOS Old Bosch. Non resistor.

With you being in Pennsylvania, what swapmeet was that? I drove to the large June Bug meet near Reading on June 6; had not been there since 2003. I thought the swap area was plentiful, though I was not looking for anything in particular.

Your black-painted parts look very good. What are you using for paint? Spray can, or more durable automotive paint applied by spray gun?

Yeah I was at the June Bug @ Maple Grove and I was in the swap with the 68 bus. Selling was a bust there and most of my friends had the same experience. I blame the heat. But the morning parts scores on early T3 really surprised me. I found some neat stuff at reasonable prices.

Another recommended show is the Duetche Classic on July 10. My good friend that gave me the three tires was the founder of that show.

Lot of the black is Rust Bullet with a brush. Used up what I had left.
Most of the engine tin is Rustoleum Engine paint. I went too thick on several parts and it makes bubbles as it dries when too thick. And of course most of the bubbles are on the topside engine tin, trying to get a smooth coat.
Just received the Master series Quart kit with the AG111 to use instead of the rust Bullet. Have not yet tried it. Mainly bought for the rear subframe and front beam. Might get the spray gun out for those parts if I can get a decent day outside to do it. Too much SHTuff in the shop now to get overspray on.

My 68 bus is in my Sig. If you see me in the swap, introduce yourself.

A buddy reminded me of a 64 Notch sitting in a junkyard. I was there 20 years ago and completely forgot about it. But time is running out on the yard due to the owners health. I made plans on going this Friday to see what is left of the car and salvage what I can.

Digging into interior while waiting for some parts.
Rear seat appeared to be original and I was wishing it had the rear armrest.

Also took out the pedal assembly. Clutch cable hook was badly worn. I didn't have a pedal assembly that has this side stepped hook so I welded it back up. And the clutch pedal pin was one SOB to get out. Brake pedal was stiff too. All are blasted up, greased and assembled waiting for the next paint day.

This is a great thread.

Love the way you're being resourceful and doing it yourself..

Don't forget to take some pics of a Notch in a junkyard.
That's not a sight you'll see to often anymore! Shocked

Well, the Junkyard Notch was cancelled today. Guy with the yard wasn't feeling well. Hope he is felling better and we can to reschedule soon.

Playing with some interior bits.

Friend gave me an NOS 12V gas gauge. Painted the needle orange. It is brighter than the pic shows.

Repainted the blue dots on the fresh air levers. Middle one was a re-do and stil drying. Quickie buff too.

Same buddy also gave me tis early radio mount. Was there still a cover of any sort for this or is it just color matched to car?

Finished up and reassembled the original jack. Put a light coat of silicone grease on the bare parts to help protect it.

Wiper motor was not working at all.
Revived the 6V wiper motor yesterday. Commutator cleaned and a brush was stuck. Tested only the motor on the bench PS. Got motor spinning.
Today I hooked it up to the pushbutton for testing to find out the Park did not work. Opened the motor and bent the contacts to the gear plate. Working now as it should.

As of now I can not get the dash light dimmer working on the pushbutton. No dash lights at all. Not worth opening for a "might" be fixable issue. Easy enough to just wire dash light into the park light circuit but wont be dimmable.
But did a few other repairs to the assembly last night. Resistor soldered on. and headlight button and plastic cover repaired. Cleaned and used De-Ox-It
Washer cap was also missing one of the tint M2 screws, ordered. Going with a thin O-ring to seal up the washer cover when the screws arrive.
