From an old 2007 post
You might find these in your boxes of parts and not know what they are for... they mount with two big tapered head phillips screws right on the back quarter interior panel.
This is what the bar on the back seat upright catches on and why you have to pull the rubber handle to release the seat back.
What size/type are these screws, so I can mount my catches? I looked at Wolfsburg west, can't find them. Classified ads only sell the catches. I need to just go to Ace Hardware but I don't know what type they are. _________________ 1968 Beetle (storage)

I got 6 mm machine screws, flat phillips head. They did not fit, so I ran a tap through there to thread them for the screws. Not the right ones, oh well. _________________ 1968 Beetle (storage)

You know all the bolts and screws are metric on stock VW but what often catches people out is that there are 2 different threads, standard and fine thread used on the bug.
Most widely available are standard thread metric parts but sometimes the bug needs metric fine threaded screws and bolts that are less commonly sold . |

My original screws are flat headed countersunk self tappers and 22mm (7/8") long.
Suggest you take the catch to the hardware and ask for 22mm long self tappers that fit the hole and the countersink.

I'm looking for a pair of these also, for my '68 Beetle convertible. When we bought the car I found one of the catches under the seat; no idea what it was until later.
The other catch was still in place and I took a screw out to get some photos. By the look of the slightly domed head I would say that this is a countersunk oval.
