Or read the tire sticky.
Or read your manual: 185R14C is what you want.

Yep, that's the current size designation to replace the "7.00-14" called for by the 1970 Owner's Manual. Many bay owners here use slightly larger sizes to good effect, usually with a C or D load rating.

Didn't get a manual from the seller? Try http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/manuals70.php Then say, Thanks, Everett!"

And if you've got a 3-day weekend to kill... the Tire Sticky actually does contain a whole lot of good info... as well as opinions.

Have fun with your bay.

OK, I'll stick my head above the parapet: Hankook RA18's are the ones I got.

Just click here and select whatever tire you can afford.

Many like the Hankook, although lotsa companies make our tire needs and size.

It is soooooo annoying when I read responses on the Samba that simply say - do a search or read the sticky. It happens way too often.

Just give the answer. Or give the answer and add info about stickies and searches. Or just don't say anything.

Are you looking for tire recommendations, spec OEM tire size, or just venting? I can provide you with OEM tire info and tires that work for my driving needs currently available. As a bonus I can show you pictures of me driving in various terrain with stock style tires. It’s also in the stickies Wink Laughing Laughing

Laughing

I was searching for tire sizes. I did search first -which is how I came upon this thread Very Happy

I vented first - then forgot to post a more useful reply.

My bus came with aftermarket rims. I don't know the width or offset.
The Tires are 195/65R15

My speedo/odo are way off I assume due to tires size.
The stock tire is 185R14. Is the unlisted aspect ratio 80?

If it is, the circumference would be about 80.6" 810.80 rev/mile
My circumference is about 78.5". 832.66 Rev/mile
My speedo is more than 10% off. I would expect it to be closer.

Could this be just tires? Or has the transmission been altered?
I am fortunate to have received a bus with all of its service records through the years. But there was one owner, George Harris in California, around 15 years ago who did work himself. (same guy who put the tires on it). He did keep parts receipts.

185R14 tires have a diameter of 25.7", a section width of 7.3", and a wheel diameter of 14". The circumference is 80.4" and they have 788 revolutions per mile.

Transmission shouldn't be a factor, the speedo drive is off the left front hub.

I knew the speedo cable went to the wheel. I've replaced a couple over the years. I should have known better than to suspect gear ratios. I changed the rear end gearing in my '83 Mustang in the 90's. But that was a different animal.

with a 15" rim the closest I can get to stock revolutions is
195/75R15 784 r/m
185R14 788 r/m Stock
205/70R15 790.9 r/m closest - but is my rim wide enough? I'll have to check.
195/70R15 807.9
185/70R15 825.5 r/m
195/65R15 832.6 r/m My current tires

Here you go:

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=...mpare1=yes

Load range 99 which exceeds the axle rating.

195/70R15 (in the right load range for a bus) is a near perfect match (circumference, anyway) for 185R14 - put it into here to compare sizes.
