I bought a 2000 Eurovan Westfalia van a year ago. It has 152k miles and is very clean. Right after I had it shipped from Kentucky there was a noticeable problem with the transmission. I took it to a local mechanic supposedly specializing in VW’s. I asked for a complete tune up and diagnostic review to get the van ready to use. There were multiple issues and all repaired/replaced except the transmission problem. We talked and I was told the particular year had issues and very few parts or places could service it. We agreed to try and I’m transmission was sent to Oregon for rebuild. Once reinstalled still wasn’t fixed. The computer panel was sent to New York and supposedly fixed. Once back it didn’t fix problem. The van had a lurch going first to 2nd and 2nd to first. Mechanic gave up and I paid 8 k for all work he could do. Took it to a transmission specialist another VW shop recommended. They said they tried a few things but couldn’t fix and charged me $ 750. When I drove off their shop the check engine light was on and blinkers didn’t work. All that was not the case when I brought it in. The great thing was the lurch was gone and I thought well it’s fixed. On the freeway coming home the van started losing power and I pulled off the road. The battery light came on and the car wouldn’t turn over. I got a tow home. With help of some friend was told maybe altinator. Tried charging battery and engine had a very loud noise when it started and sputtered out. Had it towed back to VW specialist (2nd) one that had sent me to transmission shop, and now being told engine blew. I’m 26k into this and have driven it 2-3 Miles. Need help to figure out if I scrap whole thing and call it a misfortune, or investigate new engine and or sell. Sell as is, sell for parts (how does one do that), any other suggestions??? |

You're probably not going to like my opinion on this but I'll offer it up: I'd sell it as-is, take a quick financial loss, immediately forget about it, and start focusing on what you really want to do; road trips and camping. Unless you enjoy and know how to work on 21+ year old VW's, there are better alternatives. Subaru's, Jeeps, Golf All Trac, etc. with a roof top tent or a Sprinter van if you want to sleep inside. |

A good used engine will be about $1000 plus $2000 to put it in.
I echo the advice that if you don’t want to work on it yourself , you have to budget 15-20 cents per mile for repairs, after you fixed all the broken stuff _________________ .ssS! |

I can relate. Paid 2k for mine though but I’m up to probably 8k-10k into it at this point before I was ready to take it in any road trips. It needed a loooooot. I paid for the timing chains but did the rest myself. Cost of parts adds up fast. It still needs a whole bunch of other things too I’m picking away at(hello full brake job, I’m looking at you) _________________ 2001 EV MV |

Suck it and keep going, luckily those engines are not Eurovan specific. You’ve had the major issue fixed. You’re going to take a hit either way. Just suck it up and get it driveable, summer is here.
It’s a shame you didn’t check in first to know these have weak transmissions. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia Triple knob (bastard)
