So I was wondering about this motor in the 61 it looks like a 36 hp I thought they were supposed to have 40 horse in 61 the guy swears up and down it’s original I don’t know for sure. It’s a Canadian standard Bug originally from B.C. Also there is a metal script on the passenger rear fender I’ve never seen that before just wondering if somebody put it on there or if it came like that. Anyone out there that would know this ?

Is the engine # 3904348?
Anything with 390xxxx is from June, 1960
June, 1960 doesn't seem original for a '61 Beetle.
For a Canadian Standard though - Those may have been 36hp, someone else will have to answer it.
The fender tag is original for tons of Canadian cars.
It most likely came on the car from new.
What's the stamping on the fan shroud - 173?
This fan shroud stamp would often be an "M-code" for an engine option but 173 doesn't seem to match up with an engine option here:

I have no idea what that 173 means on the shroud but I looked at this barometer and it said May 1960.
