Huh! I remember a few years ago, folks were posting that Ca. banned VR-1.
Sorry for the confusion. I was going off of memory. Embarassed
Age fades the brains cognitive processes. Shocked

OP, forget my carry oil suggestion. Apparently you can get VR-1, in the Peoples Republic. Laughing

I am planning a long trip in my 1970 standard beetle this September from Tacoma, WA to Los Angeles, CA along hwy 1 and hwy 101. It has a 1300cc dual-port with a 4-speed manual.

How many hours driving per day? What obstacles did you encounter that you didn't expect? Is seven days a reasonable time frame to sight see along the route while making time? What are some destinations I simply cannot miss? Do you know of any air-cooled shops along the route to visit? Does your clutch leg get fatigued after awhile? Any places to avoid?

Thank you!

When I was a kid (late 70's) I drove in a standard DP 1971 Beetle to/from SoCal/Lincoln, Ne. Twice. Total distance one way ~1600 miles. Never NEVER had any engine trouble-oh sure, got blown around a bit from some obnoxious semis, and caught a few stones/paint chips from same etc. No mods, no "performance additions". All stock. Used Castrol racing oil 20-40, valves checked beforehand, tires etc.

In those days it was about 62-63MPH SPEED for me and the '71. Averaged about 50 miles/hour of driving. I would drive about 500 miles a day-took about 10 hours which makes my predictions of 50 miles/hour when traveling a pretty good rule to drive by. That's potty stops, eats, gas fills, etc. Remember you're not exactly travelling in extreme comfort.

My clutch leg was fine-not a lot of shifting on the interstates. My backside could have benefitted from a better seat, but hey, I was 19. Air conditioning was "open a window". Got about 24-28MPG, but gas wasn't too bad.

I also had the usual accoutrements; ie, extra oil, belts, clutch cable-but never used 'em thankfully.

BTW, After I re-do my current project (1971 Super Beetle) I hope someday to be able to "retrace" my route.
Hehehe you can bet I will have a "sag wagon" vehicle to follow and support me though this time, and I'm not planning on driving it back-I'll tow her back!

There is something to what you said. I saw a comment in an MG forum 6 years ago. If you scroll down to where someone posted an extract from "The Lube Report" it covers banning not just VR1 but any oil not meeting current API standards. I suspect Valvoline got around it by calling it "Racing Oil" but I'm guessing

Bird, and 67. A few years ago, here in California, there was a temporary problem getting VR-1, and Valvoline had to change something on their labels. This period of VR-1 drought lasted about a month, but since then, no problem.

Yeah I think Cali passes laws, while well intentioned, mostly end up with new or changed labeling. I just bought a washing machine with a CA Prop 65 cancer warning on it. I thought about it and realized almost everything now has a CA prop 65 cancer warning on it.

Let's end the oil discussion, and let the OP have his thread back.
Sorry I brought it up!

The important part of this drive is, the memories, the OP will take away from his coastal journey.
