I've copied some information from the Valvoline website comparing G-05, G-40, and G-48 approvals from the Valvoline Product Information Sheets.

Notice the two separate lists with the distinction of "an approved formula" vs. "formulated to meet or exceeds the following antifreeze specifications".

G-05 Approvals - No mention of any VW specification.

Valvoline ZEREX G05 Antifreeze Coolant is an approved formula for the following specifications:

Looks to me like G-40 is the most "VW friendly" variety of Zerex with Valvoline including the VW TL-774-C spec on both of their lists.
At least for current cars. I don't think car makers or antifreeze makers bother to go back to figure out which varieties are suited for 30 year old cars.

G-05 was factory MB coolant back when the Vanagon was in production. It works just fine. But, then again just about any coolant will work just fine these days. This really isn't a big deal with the newest formulas.
