Working on the gauges.
Before: little too trashed even for this car
Bezels Before
Waiting for the numbers to dry on the Speedo before assembly. Did a second fill of the numbers today.
Make a mess, clean it up later
Still need to buff the back side of numbers once dry.
Took a couple tries and parts from another clock. But it ran 15 hours straight keeping time.
Clock is now 12V and the 12V gas gauge installed.

Just finished up the Speedo. Couple Custom touches...
Reads 5mph faster than actual according to my calculation and the 24.5in diameter tires I'll be running. Good enough for me. not gonna take it apart to change that.
And the Trio

Rustoleum aluminum
the three rings and only the center of the speedo were painted. Centers on clock and indicator gauge are original color. Darn close match IMO. _________________ 68 BUS

Finished all the Brake hard lines on chassis, NOS master installed and some NOS out-dated Hoses. Think the oldest one is 06/86... But it's real a NOS VW Hose. HaHa. Shift rod bushing under shifter replaced today too. Master was taken apart and closely inspected the seals, no cracks or anything I would worry about. And some black 3M dumdum around master mount to chassis. All my NOS front wheel cyls needed new cups. Had fine surface cracks where the cup contacted the cyl walls.
Oh, dont forget the tube nut
Distractions...

New harness isn't an option at the moment so I'll make or repair what I got.
Wiring takes way too long. Pretty much a day to make this front harness. More wires replaced than were saved.
Heat shrink and sealed
What was replaced.
And my Crimping.
Also had the 6V horn apart. Made that work again and tuned to sound like a VW. Keeping the 6V horn and will be using a calculated resistor to make it usable on 12V. Going with another resistor on the 6V wiper motor too.
Resistors ordered and will bench test all when they arrive.
Tomorrow I may dig into my stash and piece together some Euro headlights. _________________ 68 BUS

Front Beam Round 2.
I knew there was some rust and tried to ignore it.
Figured I would drop the beam to make life easier and found some Bad SHTuff hiding under the mounting rubbers.
Bought another Center section off the classifieds here. While it needed upper bearings it sure cleaned up NICE.
Since I already spent money on bearings and an nos outer upper Bakelite bushing. I wanted them Back.... Old beam is Toast so I made bearing removal easy.
And I got'em back, and then some. Inners too.
Have the Euro rear tail lights ready to go too. 12V 5W bulbs... BAAH. Tried some 8W and wasn't happy, 10W in there now.

This car is going to be very nice once it's done. Thank You for sharing the pics with us.
I've never seen a beam rusted under the rubber bushings before, which surprised me yours went there.
My own went on the sides, and bottom along with having a broken torsion bar (my original 71 Notch beam). But then the frame head was too far gone on it as well. I don't know where that car lived most of it's life, but my guess would have been north eastern Canada, since it came with a gas heater, before it made it's way into the states before Neil bought it (I got it from Neil). That particular car was the rustiest car I've ever worked on. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks everyone for the compliments so far.
Well, doubt this car will ever be Done... Just doing what needed to get it back on the road so I can enjoy it for a while. It's already tied up the lift longer than I want. But hopefully in the next couple weeks it will have the drivetrain, suspension and brakes. Will be able to move under its own power. Further work will resume as I can. Maybe more metal work over the winter.
Some essentials it still needs are a gas tank, SWF signal stalk and an ignition SW. Crazy prices on that stuff and at this point I am not against an early beetle ignition under the dash for now.
Front frame head is in great shape. Already cleaned it out with air and nothing came out after hammering on it etc. Some surface rust that will clean up. Front mounting clamps were blasted and nothing wrong there either.
The car actually spent the last 20+ years on a concrete slab. Dont look like in this pic after the dirt eroded under the sliding door and into the shed. Had to dig 6in of dirt to get the door open.

Those instrument really look nice you really did a good job!
I am wondering you say it is a 63. Do you know which month? Mine is from Dec. 1962. They are probably close in age.
One more thing. Don't use a resistor to drop the voltage. Get your self a cheap DC/DC converter off of eBay or Amazon. You will need approximately 10A for the wiper and the gas gauge. This will give you a steady 6V on the output. Especially with the resistor for the wiper speed you will be changing the characteristic of the wiper speed adjustment because the output of the voltage drop resistor changes with the current drawn by the wiper. And this changes when you change the wiper speed. _________________ - Michael

Thanks!
This car is June 63.
We think alike... Ordered this earlier today after bench testing the wiper using resistor. It was wonky to say the least and still no load, no arms etc.

Also the 6V horn does work well on 12V using a 2 Ohm 25W resistor. _________________ 68 BUS

And some more electrical Fixin.
Original fuel sending repaired today. It lost ground connection inside. Took it apart and cleaned. Removed rivet and more cleaning of the contacting surfaces to the top housing. Works now. And it works on a 12V gauge.
Made a vid of it too. Happy
Link
AND spend a couple hours again cleaning up the front beam. Its ready to paint.
Shiny.

My '67 square had a NAPA keyed ignition switch mounted on the bottom left of the dash, that worked fine.
It's still working good in dc's sweet squareback/pickup that is for sale now! _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts
