Hey guys!

My partner and I just bought a 1985 Westfalia Transporter (wooo!). It’s in amazing shape but we just want to have a trusted and knowledgeable mechanic look at it before we hit the road to go out West for a month. I know it will definitely need an oil change, and a new camp and car battery.

We live in HAMILTON, ON and we were wondering if anyone had any suggestions to any mechanics who have experience working with Westies?

Cheers Smile

Pick a local mechanic and get a $300 quote for batteries etc you want replaced. If you live out in the sticks he might not be a VW specialist it that’s not a big deal anyway.

You should post this in the Vanagon forum

The number of mechanics who know these 30 year old vehicles is dwindling , and will be resort to a few big cities within 5 years. We have one here near Albany NY , 5 long hours from you eastbound. Select Euro is in Waterloo NY about 110 miles from Buffalo.

Before you even make that trip, you have to inspect the fuel lines on the beast to prevent self immolation of your new ride.

Try mantis racing in oakville . Although he deals with a lot of porsches now he knows aircooled . We used to take our 72 bus to him. Heiko is the service mgr and he will be able to tell you if they can do something . The owner races porsches now but the shop used to make off road chasis an he raced them quite successfully . I bot one of his engines that he used for racing and ran it in my ghia for years.

another place that may steer you in the right direction is german supply in etobicoke. they specialize in air cooled buses and Westphalia campers and have parts for them they may be able to tell you local mechanics that can work on your model.
