I have a 78 beetle convertible that needs a rebuild. I also need to keep it stock so it passes smog, (California)

My original case has issues it was already rebuilt in the past and line bored to the limit so has to be replaced.

I've been looking at the OEM magnesium replacement cases but been having issues finding one.

Is there a better option than the OEM magnesium case that will last?

The stock FI cases didn't have a provision for a mechanical fuel pump otherwise they are basically the same.
Any late case should be able to work for you. I would look for an AE or higher lettered case if you want used or just get a new case from a qualified source.

Agree with clonebug 100%
If you can't find a FI case, just use a block off plate to cover where the mech fuel pump is bolted to.

With a California smog test in his future is using an earlier case going to cause inspection headaches?

The case shouldn't have anything to do with inspection.....the FI system will have to be up to snuff maybe, but I can't say that the specs in that year can be too hard to meet....
