Not retractable, not going to be a problem.
Mileage figures not doable right now due to a shorted O2 coax cable.
Effects at highway speeds - NOTICEABLY BETTER!

Another teaser pic!
I still have to cut some air holes in the center. Probably duct the 2 outer to the front disc area and one of the centers back to the greabox oul cooler.
Driving impressions- the turberlence effect from big rigs in front of you significantly diminished.
I have noticed lower gearbox temps, but it is not July/August yet so can't compare temps to readings I had from last road trip
Still showing same highway speeds at same RPM.
It's not too bad looking for a recycled big rig tire.

Thanks. Looks great from a distance! too many little things catch my eye.
The trailer is a Yakima Rack & Roller 72" It originally made for hauling kayaks so it does not have a large weight capacity. With the heavy duty shocks it is rated for 450lbs.. Not much, but enough to get some of the clutter out of the Syncro. Also not a heavy load to haul behind the 2.1wbx!
My kayaks are all Folbot Folders so I can stuff them inside the cargo box out of sight and assemble them at the water and then haul them from launch site to launch site.
My big reason/joy of this trailer is the ground clearance for off-road.
The trailer with the yoke fully extended is almost as long as the Vanagon/Syncro at 16' to hold long kayaks. My Greenland ll kayak is 17' long.
Here I shortened the yoke for a shorter trailer in traffic.
Another beauty of this trailer is that you can remove the wheels and collapse the suspension to flatten it, There are skateboard wheels at the end of the bed to roll it while standing on end to store it in the crowded garage. The yoke slides all the way back to reduce the height of it when standing on end.
The cargo box I put on there backwards-hinge is at the rear reversing the aerodynamics from how it was intended for putting on top of a car.
It is probably a futile attempt at trying to get the airflow off the Syncro to flow easier, but looking at it the cargo box is too far away and the airflow is still going to create the low pressure suction behind the rear hatch.
This idea might help??? I will not know until I get the O2 sensor coax wire replaced later this week to start doing some tracking of the mpg with the air dam installed.
There is an American equal to it made in steel called the "Sportsrig" Trailer.
I bought this before Covid...have not seen either of these trailers for sale since the restrictions. People are keeping them!
I really wanted to tow this around!

I've got some time between jobs to get some work done on my Syncro and today it was getting around to installing the Vanistan Fresh Air Recirc Kit I bought back in 2018.
As I was fitting the parts I noticed a big lump of sealant over in the passenger side corner of theFesh Air Inlet.
So my feline instincts got the better of me and I started to scratch it.
Suddenly I had a small pile of sandy dirt and metal on the bumper.
Somebody was hiding something in the corner.
The bottom side of the air inlet as it goes over the top of the air scoop is a “U-shaped” channel. The entire front of the corner was eaten away by the Vanagon nemesis.
No point is trying to save it so I cut some of it away to get better access to treat it.
I used a Dremel tool with both the large and small carbide tube’s to trim the edges.
I saw this little tiny pinhole…
As rusted metal goes it magically became a big hole.
The Dremel tool again to clean it up.
I used my DepsTech borescope to take a look over the top to see the inside.
I got enough of the rust hole to not leave much on the inside of it. However, there are signs of surface rust everywhere.
Also found the start of the same problem on the Drivers side on the top of the “U-channel”.
And surface rust along the top side of the inlet. Apparently it is not one piece, but a few pieces spot welded together-no surprise there!
I'll treat the rust overnight and get back on it tomorrow.

I had the same rust problem on my Syncro. The week before the shop discovered the rust, I visited a guy that parts out Vanagons and he was going to scrap a crusty Vanagon shell. Got back there just in time before it got loaded on the flatbed and he cut out the nose section for me. The shop then did a cut & paste while they had the dash out.
The green paint is from when it was a Munich police van.
This is from 5 years ago. No way I would go through this again.

I'm adding a Westy Luggage Rack to the top side and at the point where I need to decide what color to paint it.
White for less heat or Black ti match the black trim?
btw: Has anyone shown real proof the white color holds less heat in the sun?
To me hot is hot!
Edited to answer my own question:

Steve, all you have to do is put your hand on a few cars in the supermarket parking lot. The white ones are always much cooler than the red or black ones.

Because there is an air gap between that luggage piece and the actual top of the bus I believe there will not be that much difference in heat transmitted into the bus. I painted the center portion of my westy top white vs Titian Red and it made a substantial temp difference but the pop top of a westy is actually the ceiling so the heat transfer is direct, no air gap.

I was thinking that too.
Also stuffing it full of bubble wrap to create a better air pocket!
I've kinda gotten used to the white though and I'm at the paint store now...one final look before I go into the store!
Black would help me find it in the snow!

Okay. Inside the store I had basically 3 choices:
Awlgrip @ $114.82 a qt. white or black.
Interlux @ $41.22 a qt. white or black.
Topside @ $19.95 a qt. in white only.
So...it's going to be white! I don't have the AC installed yet so that had something to do with it keeping the roof over my head as cool as possible.
The "Topside" is a Rust-oleum marine paint and the only can that mentioned U.V. stability.
After checking reviews online through the smartphone "Topside" sounded good enough.
