Seems like something you could easily reference from pre-engineered span tables from the LVL beam manufacturer. Have you tried looking at that info and taking it to your building dept? Does your local building dept. require a stamped plan or letter from a structural engineer? You can find LVL beam span tables with quick internet search. _________________ Wish List:

Your lumberyard should be able to spec it for you. _________________ "Albatross"! |

so is it a gable roof connected to a larger gable roof - like this photo:https://i.pinimg.com/564x/91/a0/27/91a027623721931157de81f05233a9b1.jpg
and if so, is the opening you want to make along the load bearing wall of the larger gable roof (where the smaller roof ties into the exterior wall of the larger gable roof structure)?
If the only thing above the beam is attic space, there will be zero live load (aka singe story house). If there is a second story above the beam, you will have a live load.
Do you live in an area that receives snow? if so, your building department will certainly have a dead load rating to represent potential snow load. _________________ Wish List:

Apparently they are too cheap inMiami.. holy smokes.
No live load on a one story (up thread)
You just need to add the weight of timber amd roofing to overhang part of the roof. It will actually be less as the re is no roofing under the gable, and that’s by far the bulk of the load
Lumber about 20 pound per stick
Roofing about 2 pounds per square foot _________________ .ssS! |

Attic rafters usually take a 20 lb/sf live load for storage use. Roof rafters snow load if your area requires it, or some live load for workers walking around on it, typically not simultaneous with snow load.
Dead loads for the rafters, the sheathing and all that make up the Roof have to be accounted for. if the roof has multiple roofing layers, the weight starts adding up fast.
Have you found out what the local jurisdiction requires for a renovation? Until you do you are pissing away time and energy. _________________ my59: Well son, my grandfather died before I got to drive it, so does that answer your question?
