|
|
Hi,
I have a Single Speed wiper motor and what appears to be a 2-speed wiper motor switch. I can't make sense of the wiring. I checked both the continuity of the switch and motor and they are both good it would appear, but when I try to wire them into my car i can't make heads or tails of them. Any diagrams that might help me out?
Thanks |

Upper right of screen, see the "Technical" button? Hover mouse cursor over that.
In list that pops up left click on the "Wiring".
That will take you to the type 2 wiring section, left click on the "type 1 wiring".
Next page will show type 1 wiring diagrams year by year. Check out the diagrams for the 65 to 67 years. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

The two speed wiper switch is shown with 6 terminals in the '67 Beetle diagram...
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/bug67.jpg
The single speed wiper switch for -'66 only shows 3...
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/bug_66_USA.jpg
Are you saying your switch has too many terminals?
If so, make sure the wiper motor is grounded to the body.
Then run the black fused power wire to terminal "+", or 30 on the switch.
Run a black/violet wire from switch terminal 53a to the wiper motor terminal 54.
Run a brown wire from switch terminal 31b to wiper motor terminal 31b.
Then dis-regard terminals 53b and 31 on the switch. _________________ -Bruce

How many times have I answered this question?? Many, and in conjunction with those answer are these diagrams:

using the 67 diagram above I can get the "click" if I ground the terminal with the "tit" , for lack of a better word, on it.
Is this correct and if so how do you attach a connector to that??? _________________ 65 Beetle

Nice but what size resistors did you use? |

the wiper motor grounds to the wiper linkage, which has a small screw attaching a ground wire to it, which then jumps to wiper switch (along with other ground points coming off of it) _________________ Rebel Wire Representative

the terminal that I've grounded has no sort of connector (used an alligator clip). sorry if I sound like an idiot but i'm not getting it....LOL
it's the post that is not a 1/4 male circled in red.
Do I need to put a connector on this post..???

on the left side of your pic, where the bracket comes beside the wiper motor, there looks like a screw hole there, use a self tapping screw and attach a good clean ground there with a small ring terminal and take that wire to a known good ground spot. (the motor will ground through the case, to the bracket). don't worry, you'll get it. _________________ Rebel Wire Representative

When installed in the car, there should be no need for a dedicated ground wire, provided that the wiper rack has the brass tab over the rubber grommet where it bolts to the cowling.
And regarding this:

sorry, that's in the text from the Gallery listing for that photo:

Diagram of both the 1967 wiper motor wiring, and the 1966/earlier style. Also diagrams on how to use the later switch to run the earlier motor - or to add two resistors in there to effectively give two speeds.
I believe the resistances I have in my 62 are
Resistor #1 - 1.7 ohms;
Resistor #2 - 1.3 ohms; (but I use an adjustable hi-watt resistor so I can alter that at need)
NOTE - this is the revised diagram, I previously had this up with a couple of the conversion terminal numbers reversed. |

I was thinking that crowe's buggy was a fiberglass body, which is why I recommended the ground wire. I also just have a "thing" for ground wires, since they are the most common wiring problems that I hear about. _________________ Rebel Wire Representative

Jeremy is correct. This is a fiberglass build. _________________ 65 Beetle

unless your wiper motor bracket is bolting to a metal brace or something that it's self is well grounded, then you will need that ground wire going to your wiper bracket. You don't need to go overboard, but extra grounds will not hurt, especially on a fiberglass body. _________________ Rebel Wire Representative

Very nice work, appreciate the updated/corrected diagram and the Resistance of the resistors you used. what would be helpful for those that want to do it is also the wattage. If I get around to doing the 2 speed, can calculate the wattage needed. (P (Watts) = V x I ) . I'd probably go with 50 Watt or more to get a safety factor in there. |

Would there be any way to put a variable resistor so that you could have an infinite range of speed on one of the switch positions? By using an electric guitar pot?
also, What size resistors would i need to get?
Two different size ones? or two of the same size? |
