SOS
Anyone in the Warm Springs (central Oregon) area? We are stranded. Van died, not sure what’s wrong. Checked fuel pump and relay but not sure what else to look at other than wiring. Was fine from sandy to here but on the way up it the van started to stutter almost like a bad miss or lack of gas. Will turn over but nothing besides that. |

What resources do you have on hand?
Voltmeter?
Tools?
Bentley?
Good internet connection to talk to us?
Local Autoparts store or mailbox to get parts?
AAA CARD?
Do you actually have gas in the tank? _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

We have minimal tools unfortunately. Wrench, flat head screw driver.
Cleaned out van before trip and did not plan ahead. My foul on that!!
We have LTE where we are and no auto stores around.
We do have AAA if it comes to that. But trying to figure this out sense we have two pups with us.
** update.
It started and revved freely
Drove 100 feet then same choking then dying so we coasted to the side again. I’m wondering fuel filter?
We are about 45 miles from home |

You say you have no tools, but you have AAA and internet...
45 miles? Call AAA and remove the "stranded" from the problems list, and avail yourself of better tools.
Then get back to us and we can help you fix the problem.

this
may as well either get a tow home to pdx, or keep trekking via tow truck to bend/madras/redmond/whatever and get back to civilization. not doing any good sitting in BFE warm springs with no tools.
im betting coil. since we're throwing out guesses.
works for a minute once cooled down, dies again shortly thereafter. _________________ MegaSquirt resource - SpitfireEFI.com

Remove the plug from the TSII sensor and short between the terminals. |

If it is an older van it sounds like the little plastic fuel filter before the pump has clogged, _________________ 84 westie 2.2 w/ digijet, AT |

Unplug your O2 sensor and see if that will allow the engine to keep running. |

Did I miss the part about what type and details of engine in this Van? Hopefully you got a tow back to Portland and safe from the heat and fires going on in Warm Springs.
About 45 Vans and buses were camping in Maupin over the weekend. Maybe you saw my buddy’s 59 splitty being towed back to PDX. (Seized engine after 240,000 miles)
Let us know how it goes. _________________ Keep on Busin'

Check the distributor, the hall sensor wire will get brittle just outside of the housing, between where it disappears under the intake on top of the block. |

since you were only 45 miles from home, i assume AAA got you back where you want to be. always stressful and hopefully you ended up delayed but not harmed.
before you head out for the next adventure, we can help you prepare, if you are interested. minimal tool kits, some basic troubleshooting skills, and a few spare parts. you're driving a literal antique vehicle, eligible for collector license plates and classic car insurance discount. but ya gotta show us you're in for the duration with a willingness to buy tools (and bring them!) and learn their use. otherwise, this may not be the vehicle for you. _________________ -dan

Unless Oregon has changed it stupid laws, few who were alive when a Vanagon were built will live long enough to see it become an antique. A 1980 Vanagon will not become an antique until 2060 or some such BS, and a 91 until 2082. |

Recently refueled, or driven through any rain? Your description is symptomatic of water in the gas.
Wouldn't hurt to add a bottle of HEET or similar, it's cheap & can be very effective... <shrug>

Heet keeps the water in the fuel from freezing but lets the majority of it continue to sit in the bottom of the tank and pass through the fuel loop as large slugs causing much the same problem that the water did in the first place. While ISO-Heet will cause the water to be suspended in the fuel so that it will pass through the FI system and be eliminated.
If you can find it just buy 99% Isopropyl Alcohol, it should cost about half of what ISO-heet does, at least in the pre-Covid world. |
