Hi Gang,

It seems that after a few hundred miles my brakes have a tendency to tighten rather than loosen up. They are easy enough to adjust, so no problems there.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Something is not right.

Any recent new work?

Brakes were done 5 years ago by the previous owner.

You have stuck wheel cylinders, stuck master cylinder, or the master cylinder push rod is not set right.

A brake system rebuild is most likely on your horizon. Smile

Or rusty drums perhaps from lack of use.

Or all of the above!

Are the star adjuster keepers in place? I've one wheel without and that always needs more adjustment.

As already mentioned, by me and the two others. There are a list of possibilities. The only way to take care of it, is to go through the entire system.

Until you take the time to tear it apart, you will not fully know what is wrong. 5 years is a poor indicator these days. I have a 70 that I have put just under 7000 miles on in 5 years. It had all new brakes at the start of that, and I am certain that they are still in good shape. But, if you have never touched them, its time to get down and dirty!

On the sticking, there are several possibilities. The number one is a bad hose as they are often the most neglected part of the system. Follow that up with a master cylinder and then a wheel cylinder. I have even seen one where the backing plate had grooves worn into it and the edge of the shoe would get caught in it during braking. The wheel locked up. Guy that owned the car had taken it to a Midas, then a Sears and then me. I was the guy that did not get to replace everything for the third time. Instead, we got a used backing plate in good shape and R&R'd for the guy.

All that to say, go looking!

Well, The car is up on stands and the brakes adjusted properly. However, when I push on the brake pedal two wheels become more difficult to turn. Gonna start with brake lines.

Nice job!

Seen a lot of brake hoses turn into check valves!

An overlooked cause is the short "rubber" line between the MC and the reservoir.

This can fail and swell internally, which leads to a gradual tightening of the brakes - but it's normally all 4 get tight at the same time.

Still a single circuit MC? Which two are tight?

Turns out that the rubber brake lines were indeed bad, even though they looked new(ish).
