I second that. I had Tim (VolkzBitz) rebuild my 34Pict-3 and it came back as good as new.

While this may be in theory the best option, please check if they can maybe test it after the rebuild.
I had mine rebuilt in Germany (very reputable guy), and it did not idle at all. Backing off the idle jet slightly, and loctiteing into place, did the trick.
Maybe I'm wrong, but there isn't really a way to check if the idle jet was forced into the thread too much at one point, so that when you snug it up normally, it goes past the "sweet spot" (because the thread is longer) and you get less fuel.
At least a small detail to think about

It's an original Solex 30PICt-3 made in W Germany, doesn't seem to have play in the throttle shaft. to me it feels like it's slightly lean. If I give it a slight tap of the gas to richen it with the accelerator pump it seem better for a second. Possibly a richer idle jet or idle air jet? What do you think? Is this typical of today's ethanol fuel causing lean conditions? |
My understanding is that the gasoline with ethanol would lean out the mixture and it also has less energy and generally does not work the same way as pure gasoline. Need larger jets to overcome this but better to find E0 gas. You should be able to find ethanol free gas in upstate NY, give it a try and see.
I have a 34 pict3 from Tim (Volkzbitz). I got it about 8 years ago and it has been working perfectly. Probably have 10-15K miles on it at least. It has larger 130/55 jets to better handle E10 gas. I believe Tim's carbs normally come with larger jets to work with E10 gasoline.

Thanks for the tips and link guys, I'll continue working with it and try to get it to smooth out.
Meanwhile, the Squrit is smoothing out very nicely....

I enriched the main jet and pilot jet and that really made the nice improvement in the driveability I was hoping for, no more stalling coming to a stop and the hitching feeling when driving with a light throttle is gone. It's so much nicer to drive being smooth.
How do you guys carry bikes with these things? I can very carefully let it ride as a co-pilot with the roof down but if it starts to rain I'll have to make a decision.
For anyone that cares.......
I marked out the water line with a laser level and painted the bottom of the boat red.
And after that cured, flipped it to start work on the top side!

Other than the piece of masking tape on it that says Ghia I wonder what other proof he has. I’m calling BS on that one. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

No, I wouldn't either!!! But knowing me, if I put a bike on that beautiful upholstery, with my luck, I would damage it for sure. _________________ Marc

Greetings Ghia group. Not much activity going on with my Ghia, once I got it fully situated looking and driving nice it just sits and collects dust. I don't think I've driven it in about six weeks.
I did just find that tail light lens I needed at the swap meet at the Terryville CT VW show this past weekend. A near perfect Hella made in Germany for only $10!
There were plenty of Ghia sedans at the show....
And in the Ghia convertible section, there was only one...
-check out tha Schwimmwagen
I would have driven mine there but wanted to camp out at the show Saturday night so drove my '89 Westy instead. |

Years ago there used to be two Schwimmwagens that would show up to the Litchfield show. I have not seen one in years either, glad that one showed up this year.

Not surprising. Way more coupes out there. I'd love to go, but I need to get the darn thing road worthy first, and then gain some confidence with reliability. But possible for sure. _________________ Marc

You caught me in this photo; I'm at far right with the checkered shirt and the straw hat, speaking with the Ghia's owner rbfara who has his back to you. Nuts that we did not realize who we are. In this group, not seen on the right, was Dennis from v-dubstore in eastern PA who is my VW cylinder head and case machining specialist. I asked the event DJ whom I've known for over 20 years if there was a Samba group photo, which in past years (long ago) used to be taken right at the DJ bus- and there seemed not to be one this year. I missed meeting several other Samba people at the event such as Mustie1 and 67ctbug. Maybe next year your Ghia will be displayed in this class! |

Cool! I've know JimmyD the DJ for years, he was hanging out with our group around the campfire Saturday night. What a great show it was this year! |

Well here it is August already and I still don't think I've even put more than a couple hundred miles on my Ghia.
I did come across this beauty over the weekend at the Wolfsgart show in Burlington....
