You can do this yourself. It is intimidating but not hard. Time to get dirty and take control. We are here to help.

I recognize that. Biggest problem is time. I am focused on taking care of my clients and meeting the associated deadlines. maintaining house, keeping fit, practicing piano.

I was hoping I could pay an expert to do the work on the van. That said, we really like the guys who are our new mechanics and want to keep on best of terms with them. So, I'm blaming myself and chalking it up to lack of super detailed reinforced x 100 and repeated 9K times and then go there in person and follow up with a zoom meeting, CLEAR AND DETAILED COMMUNICATION.

I found this thread just a little too late seeing that I had just replaced the torn boots on the passenger side axle of my '86 Weekender about trhee weeks ago.

I ordered my boots from Van Cafe and got the GKN Lobro boots which were the same boots I had replaced in 2014 (driver's side) and 2015 (pass. side). The boots on the drivers side have held up well, but the boots on the pass side were both torn like they had been torn by something on the groove closest to the outside flanges. Since I don't drive my van a lot, they only had about 15K miles on them. I guess, from this discussion that I was lucky to get the miles I did out of them.

Having just replaced them I will see how long they last.

After driving 100 miles or so, I noticed that a leak in my transaxle seal had gotten worse, and, not having the stomach to attempt fixing it myself, I made and appointment and took it to a well thought of shop in Salt Lake City to have it professionally replaced.

I picked it up this afternoon and it sould be good to go. They replaced the drive axle seal and the drive flange cap as well as a qt of gear oil.
Total price was $527 including $350 in labor, $70 to diagnose and $60 to test drive and inspect for leaks.

I was ok with the price, but have no reference as to what the job should cost, I'm just writing this to help me determine if I want to do more business with this shop. My normal mechanic is a 1 man shop and he was too busy to fit me in.

I'm not writing this to bash the shop in any way.

I am planning on driving to Tacoma, WA and back and would like to take the van if I can get my confidence in it back up. It is running great, and until I made these discoveries I was feeling pretty good about it. I will first take it on a shorter trip to get a good feel for it, and when I return I will check the torque on the axle bolts again and watch for new leaks.

Sounds like a good plan to me. You'll likely be fine. And if it leaks again you'll be able to fix it yourself with our help.
